(I 14 MAPLE 62 w x F7 inicorcit) N 5566 DRAKE RD. (CORNER WALNUT LAKE RD.) IN SUMMIT PLACE SHOPPING CENTER 661-8088 FRIDAY. AUGUST 12. 1988 1 hile shoveling pa- pers about in a move at home that never came about, I ran across an interesting letter to the editor at Nation's Restaurant News, Feb. 18, 1985. "I have been the restaurant and night editor of the Sacramento Union for the past 24 years. I dine out about five nights a week and then give my impressions in "Nite Life," which is a feature that appears in the paper every Friday morning. "What prompts me to write this letter is an item that ap- peared in the Nov. 26 issue of Nation's Restaurant News concerning the Coach House restaurant. According to the owner, critic Marian Burros, who writes for the New York Times, all but caused the restaurant to fold because of her critique. "I'm getting a little sick and tired of these so-called food critics trying to play God. I would wager that many of them couldn't even fry an egg. "These self-appointed, holier-than-thou characters visit a restaurant and order a meal. If it isn't to their liking, they break their asses getting back to the typewriter and proceed to crucify the restaurant. "Some, I understand, may even go back two or three times. It would be interesting to know whether it ever oc- curred to them to talk to the owner and/or manager and give them an opportunity to rectify whatever may have been wrong. "Of course I have been serv- ed meals that were not to my liking, but I have the guts to send the meal back to the kit- chen. Nine times out of 10, whatever was wrong is cor- rected. I do not hesitate to talk to the owner, especially when I receive letters com- plaining about the food or service. "One of these days restaurateurs and their associations will get their acts together and start suing some of these so-called experts. "One final thought. It is just too bad that food critics do not realize that we all have different palates, which are affected by emotions, alcoholic beverages, etc., and they are by no means im- mune." (Written by Mike Dante, "Nite Life' ' editor, Sacramen- to Union, Sacramento, Calif.) AUDITIONS FOR a first- time presentation by Nancy Gurwin Productions . . . COULD BE ... that Billy Rose Quartet wil leave Le Bordeaux at the end of their contract in September . . . and head back to this part of the northwest area again . . . Folks like Bernie Zivov of Gregg's and Excalibur Shoes, and Edee Moss of Edee's Boutique, etc., who love to dance to the strains of Billy's group, are among the many who hope so. . WHEN SULTAN'S restaurant opened Sept. 1 last year, people thought the beautiful 96-seater would become just another lovely passing dining fancy. But owner Walid Eid's ex- cellent food and very per- sonable staff made believers out of many who continually return for Lebanese dining at its best. To the many who still haven't been there . . . Sultan's is not the easiest place to find . . . It's around back in sector behind Dunham's, north of I Browse in Robin's Nest Shopping Center on Orchard Lake Road and 14 Mile . . . Good food and service always win out, though . . . and Walid has them returning . . . plus new faces every day. His shish tawook, charbroil- ed chicken breasts chunks, is an outstanding dish . . . and the vegetarian or regular stuffed grape leaves and stuff- ed cabbage leaves rank among the best . . . Everything at Sultan's is made with the best olive oil that can be purchased . . . a big reason why so many doc- tors eat there . . . It's extra virgin olive oil . . . which can't get any better. If you like rice pudding, and I'm trying it everywhere, you'll love the one at Sultan's . . . thick, no eggs, with rosewater, cinnamon, chopped walnuts and the expensive mastica herb which many places don't use because of its expense ($50 per pound). WATER COMES in large wine carafes and one of the Owners or both are always there to see that everything goes smoothly . . . This is the very popular E.G. Nick's which was two years old in February. There's seating for 250 plus 50 private in the former Schuler's locale on W. Maple off Orchard Lake Road. Its minestrone soup is with oodles of vegetables and slic- ed potato . . . The linguini and clam sauce has three pasta colors, green, beige and white . . . The big seller, lemon chicken, is outstanding . . . Seems like I'm in a rut .. . —4 4 4 4
