New Jerusalem Hyatt
Beats The Intifada

Now we can see it before
you can feel it. When it's no
bigger than the dot on this
pa e.
And when it's 90% cur-
able. With the best chance
of saving the breast.
The trick is catching it
early. And that's exactly
what a mammogram can do.
A mammogram is a sim-
ple x-ray that s simply the
best news yet for detecting
breast cancer. And saving
lives.
If you're over 35, ask
your doctor about
mammography.

versy is the last thing
Norman Rafelson
needs these days.
The general manager of the
$60 million Hyatt Regency in
Jerusalem has his hands full
filling beds in the 520-room
facility in the midst of the in-
tifada and a resulting decline
in tourism to Israel, par-
ticularly among American
Jews.
Claims by Palestinians that
the hotel sits on 7.5 acres of
"confiscated" Arab land near
Mt. Scopus, and a call among
some Arab leaders to boycott
the hotel and the Hyatt chain
— which operates in Saudi
Arabia, Dubai, Morocco and
Egypt — are off base, he
believes.
"We're an easy target: he
said last week. "And if we are
seen as a barometer of what's
happening (to Israeli tourism
as a result of the intifada),
then God bless because you
can't get a room in this hotel
for the next 14 days."
A combination of con-
ferences by the Coalition for
the Advancement of Jewish
Education, the United Jewish
Appeal Young Leadership,
Israel Bonds and a 350-person
pilgrimmage organized by
Louisiana-based television
evangelist Jimmy Swaggart
gave the Hyatt its first string
of full bookings since opening
in January.
After logging occupancy
rates of less than 30 percent
in its initial months and fac-
ing the prospect of closing,
Rafelson said the hotel
achieved a 50 percent oc-
cupancy in June and turned
a profit. He pegged July's oc-
cupancy at 60 percent and

projected a 70 percent rate for
August.
"1988 was supposed to be a
good year for us," he said. "We
expected occupancy levels of
more than 60 percent, based
in part on Israel's 40th an-
niversary. And 1989 wasn't
projected to be as good.
"But as good as our plan
was, we had to set it aside and
go back to our ownership
(because of the intifada)," he
added.
Rafelson, who managed the
Hyatt on Capital Square in
Columbus, Ohio, before accep-
ting the Jerusalem position
in January, recently spent
more than a month in the
U.S. in an effort to lure
tourists back to Israel and
promote the Hyatt as
Jerusalem's premier hotel.
Rafelson acknowledged that
his five-star competitors, such
as the Dan chain's King
David and the new LaRomme,
are also calling on American
travel agencies and Jewish
communal leaders for a share
of the same pie.
"But there's enough to go
after, and we are going after
it," he added.

Press Closure
Is Reduced

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A one-
week closure of the Hebrew
daily Hadashot ordered by
the military censor was cut
down to one hour, after edit-
ors apologized for violating
censorship regulations.
The censor ordered
Hadashot closed after the
newspaper failed to present
for pre-publication censorship
two stories on promotions and
resignations within the Israel
Defense Force.
