Rap Session Turns To
Real Estate Roundtable

hat started as a rap
session for a group
of young, profes-
sional men has turned into
the first Real Estate Round-
table in the country.
Launched four years ago by
local developers David Steuer
and Mark Canvasser, the
group has grown from a few
men in their mid-20s who
have real estate interests to a
professional organization
with a 1,200-person mailing
list.
"There were about half a
dozen of us who met for an in-
formal dinner," recalls Steuer,
of Steuer and Canvasser Inc.
of Southfield. "Most of us
were in real estate and were
sharing ideas. Then someone
stood up and said, 'I dub this
the Real Estate Round-
table: "
At the time, no professional
organizations catered to
young people in the real
estate industry. So Steuer and
Canvasser started network-
ing to attract a young au-
dience. Today, the group's
focus is on business and not
age.

"We have created a forum
for real estate professionals,"
Steuer explains. "Now we've
taken on an aggressive role as
a professional group."

Its members — mostly
developers, attorneys, real
estate agents, bankers and ac-
countants — meet four times
a year for dinner, discussions
and guest lecturers. Attorney
Jeff Sternberg, who joined the
roundtable in 1986 after
returning to his hometown
from Boston, puts together a
quarterly newsletter for the
group's members.

Steuer, who serves as
roundtable president, now
wants the group to branch out
nationally to create a larger
network. A second chapter is
now forming in New York by
business associates of
Steuer's.
Speakers have included
developers and consultants. c/
Denver developer John
Madden, who is building
downtown Detroit's newest
high-rise office structure, will
address the group during its
fall meeting on Sept. 26 at
5:30 p.m. at Glen Oaks Coun-
try Club in Farmington Hills.
There is a charge.

Michigan Transportation
Hall of Honor.
Rubin made his mark in
the industry as executive of-
ficer of the Mackinac Bridge
Authority when it was
created in 1950 until he
retired in 1983.
