WRESTLING Stuart Shapiro of Mt. Plea- sant, a 112-pound high school wrestler, and Eric Swartz, who wrestled at 185 for the West Bloomfield High fresh- man team last year, are Detroit's only grapplers. Brian Greenstein, who wrestles at Ferris State University, helped Swartz at one workout, giving him in- formation on the freestyle technique which the Maccabi Games will use. "I had him come to one of my workouts," says Greenstein, "and I ex- plained all the rules to him and showed him some moves for freestyle." Michigan high school wrestling is more restrictive than freestyle in the types of holds which are allowed. The point-scoring system is also different. Greenstein will probably not attend the games, but may give more help to the wrestlers before they leave for Chicago. SOCCER As with most other sports, the soccer players have spent the summer on separate teams or in separate camps and have not practiced together as a full team. Re- cent practices have drawn more players. The team's key problem is the lack of a goalkeeper. Coach Gabriel At- tar was still not certain, in early August, who would play in the net. Attar was also not certain what style the team will play. "We've been working most of the time on skills and I haven't even thought about it . . . It depends on what kind of team we play, what their weaknesses are. I like to play open. I don't like to close my game. But if we will play teams that will push on us hard, we'll have to change the system. "Basically we're gonna go there and enjoy ourselves. Without a goalie it's very dif- ficult . . . In Chicago we're go- ing to play teams that will notice it very fast." The team consists of Shaw Brown, Brian Feldman, Greg Hirsch, Andrew Horowitz, Howard Larky, Mark Lebo- vitz, Ari Nessel, Jason O'Desky, Eric Pevzner, Joel Pittman, Josh Richelieu, Jef- frey Starkman, Jonathan Starkman, Randy Sweetwine and Brad Trivax. The assis- tant coach is Steve Robinson. -(
