BACKGROUND: Irving Rosenbaum was
born and raised in Detroit. "Since it
was the Depression, our family kept
moving." His father David was an
ironworker, and his mother Mollie was a
housewife. Irving Rosenbaum was
graduated from Cass Technical High
School in 1943.
"The last time I was in The Jewish
News was when I was listed as Missing
In Action during World War II."
Actually, Rosenbaum was never missing,
but he was wounded.
When he came - home from the war, he
and his father started a steel
fabricating business. At the same time,
he began attending Wayne State
University studying economics.
At WSU, he met his future wife on a
blind date under the clock at the Old
Main Building. "On our first date, we
went to the Graystone Ballroom. After
we danced, I knew I had to marry her."
He continued his graduate education at
the University of Michigan, while still
working at Davis Iron Works, Inc. He
retired four years ago, after working
there for 40 years.
"I retired, and I had to have
something to do. I wanted to help
people." Rosenbaum decided to attend
law school, at age 59. Both of his sons
are attorneys, and he was raised in a
family that discussed politics, civil
liberties and justice for the poor and
oppressed.
Rosenbaum found law school an
intriguing challenge and a stimulating
career change. "I never worked so hard
in my life."
He was so happy attending college, he
may pursue a degree in labor law. "I
should graduate when I'm 70."
