Mother Asks
Court To Spare
Treatment

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
mother of a 32-month-old
baby girl appealed to the Tel
Aviv district court for an in-
junction barring a hospital
from administering any life-
support treatment to her
daughter. The application for
the injunction was filed on
behalf of Talila Shefer by at-
torney Yitzhak Hoshen,
chairman of the Israel
Euthanasia Society. Shefer's
daughter, Yael, is a patient in
the Rebecca Sieff Hospital in
the Galilee town of Safed with
Tay-Sachs disease.
Doctors say the girl, who is
blind and cannot eat or func-
tion is not expected to live.
Shefer is seeking the injunc-
tion to disconnect life support
systems and end the child's
suffering as soon as possible.
There is no known cure or
treatment for illness which
mainly affects Ashkenazi
Jews.

Indeed, Labor has a full
plate of problems.
For a start, it must contend
with a clutch of bright, new,
mediagenic political stars on
the Likud Party ticket
(among them former Am-
bassador to the United Na-
tions Binyamin Netanyahu
and Benny Begin, son of the
former Likud leader and
prime minister), as well as
such charismatic veterans as
former Defense Minister
Ariel Sharon and David Levy,
who command a large ethnic
following.
The new young stars in par-
ticular are highly articulate:
They echo the populist
message of the party and ap-
peal not only to the intellec-
tuals but also to the grass-
roots.
A further blow to Labor is
the fact that a high percen-
tage of young Israelis, many
of whom have had first-hand
experience of the intifada and
are voting for the first time,
are expressing right-wing or
extreme right-wing views.
Barring some dramatic,
new, unexpected turn of
events, many Israelis will go
to the polls convinced that
they do not have a partner for
peace talks.
The effect of such a conclu-
sion could totally alter the
face of Israel for years to
come.
