FRIDAY. AUGUST 12. 1988

Arthur Lipsitt: Borman Hall poet.

of the home," he says.
So he went to Toledo to see
how other councils operate.
When he returned to Detroit,
he set about establishing the
Home for the Aged's first
residents council. Lipsitt was
elected the group's president
and chairman of the council's
executive committee.
Meeting monthly, the coun-
cil is open to all residents.
Among the issues it has ad-
dressed are food preferences
("We didn't want anymore of
that hot borscht," Lipsitt says)
and improving safety
measures. At Lipsitt's recom-
mendation, the Home
adopted a policy of providing
residents with identification
cards and name plates for
their doors.
Borman Hall resident Lib-
bie Laurens, a member of the
council executive committee,
met Lipsitt 11 years ago
when she came to the Home.
Lipsitt "takes care of quite
a few things here," Laurens
says. "And people are always
coming to him for advice."
Although he stepped down
as council president last
April, Lipsitt continues to re-
main involved in resident ac-
tivities at the Home for Aged.
He runs the weekly Shab-
bat services and still attends
council meetings. He is eager
to see that others do the same.
One of his ways of guarantee-
ing resident participation is
through music.

"I'll sing some funny songs
before the meeting to bring
the crowds in," Lipsitt says.
"In one of them, I say I'm go-
ing to 'get me a broad! That
always makes the ladies
laugh."
Lipsitt also is a seasoned
harmonica player, though he
winces when he recalls that,
as a child, he could buy a har-
monica for 25 cents.
"This one," he says, taking
a harmonica from his desk
drawer, "cost $18." Then he
begins playing "A Bicycle
Built for Two." He has many
favorites — the kinds of songs
that bring to mind picnics
and lemonade and boys in
sailor suits — like "Yankee
Doodle Dandy" and "You're a
Grand Old Flag?'
Lipsitt keeps a list of all the
tunes he knows by their open-
ing lines. "Just give me the
first line," he says, "and I can
sing it?'
But his first love is poetry.
He reads it at gatherings at
Borman Hall and writes it for
almost anyone who makes
the request. Lipsitt frequent-
ly writes verses for residents
who wish to capture their
memories in a poem.
Once, he recalls, a man ask-
ed him to write something
about his mother. The resi-
dent was so pleased he came
back several weeks later, ask-
ing for a poem about his
father.
At the end of the day, Lip-
