R

echov Bialik, just
off bustling Allenby
Street in the heart of
Tel Aviv, is one of the city's
most charming and historic
strets. Here, the famous poet
Chaim Nahman Bialik, for
whom the street is named,
lived in a building that today
is a museum housing the
works of Reuven Rubin.
Carmella Rubin, his
daughter-in-law, has been the
curator of Rubin House,
where Reuven Rubin also
lived.
"It's impossible to recap-
ture the atmosphere that the
house once had," she said.
"Rubin had an exceptional
aesthetic sense." Never-
theless, a painstaking at-
tempt has been made to
recreate the house and life of
the painter exactly as it was
until Rubin's death in 1974.
When Rubin died, he be-
queathed the house and 45
major works to the city of Tel
Aviv. Other paintings and
drawings were subsequently
donated to the museum, in-
cluding a large collection
owned by his friend, Arthur
Rubinstein.
Some of Rubin's best known
pictures, including the
ecstatic "Blue Rooster" and
his 1950 tour de force, "Seder

in Jerusalem," are included.
Rubin was the most fervent
of early Zionists and his 1922
self-portrait shows his devo-
tion to the land. In this pic-
ture, he appears as a sun-
burned pioneer, holding a
fragile flower in one hand and
a clutch of paint brushes in
the other, against a
background of shacks and
tents on the Jaffa sands. He
lived and painted in a tent at
the time.
Rubin House features an
extensive reading room and
exhibition of artifacts
relating to Rubin's life and
times. Rubin's studio has
been recreated on the third
floor of the house exactly as
he left it, and a small theater
has been arranged where
visitors can watch a short
biographical film.
Rubin's career as a painter
and occasional set designer
took a turn in 1948 when,
after the State of Israel was
declared, Ben-Gurion asked
him to serve as Israel's first
ambassador to Romania. The
story goes that an astonished
Rubin asked, "What do I
know about being an am-
bassador?" Shrugged Ben-
Gurion, "So what do I know
about being a prime
minister?"
Today
his
pictures
sometimes seem like recrea-
tions of a happier time.
