((Q 1)) -g BREADWINNER Of West Bloomfield Will Tickle Your Taste Buds areatiour One of Metropolitan Detroit's Most Beautiful and Exciting Restaurant-Lounges Presents were not interested in modern art, she recalls, but eventual- ly (with some persistent en- couragement on her part) began seeking additional con- temporary pieces for their homes and offices. She herself came to her pas- sion for modern art via Michelangelo and the Italians, she says. "When I was a student at Connecticut College in New London many years ago, I fell in love with the Italians. I'd cut out prints of works I liked best, and put them on all my walls. As I grew older, my taste changed a bit, and I became more in- terested in the art that was happening in my century." The dedicated collector says she's looking forward to being on hand when the auction gets under way Saturday evening. It will mark the first time any of the extensive Bar- ron collection has been a highlight of Meadow Brook's annual fund raiser, although selected pieces from the Bar- rons' art assemblage have hung at the gallery since 1967, including works by Claes Oldenburg, Jackson Pollack and Helmett Middendorf. "We've been greatly in- terested in art at Meadow Brook since they established the art (gallery) there," she says. "And we want to do what we can to keep it going. I think it's especially impor- tant at times like these, when universities suffer because their budgets have been cur- tailed by the state. One of my main interests is young ar- tists who need support?' A cocktail reception and dinner, starting at 6:30 p.m., will precede the auction, which is scheduled to get under way at 8 p.m. Shotwell- Gustafson Pavillion is adja- cent to Meadow Brook Hall, on the east campus of Oakland University. For tickets, call Meadow Brook, 370-3005. I LOCAL NEWS Cancer Group Has Meeting A focus on living with cancer meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Providence Hospital.
