On Pogrom

Amsterdam (JTA) — Trig-
gered by blood libels, a Dutch
television station broadcast
last week documentary on a
pogrom on Kielce, Poland
which existed for more than
a year after the close of World
War II. At least 42 Jews were
murdered and countless
numbers injured during the
July 4, 1946 rampage in
Polish soldiers participated.
Many middle-aged and
elderly eyewitnesses to the
pogrom were interviewed for
documentary, which was
made by a film crew using
hand-held cameras and
without the cooperation of the
Polish authorities.
According to the documen-
tary, the first attack was on a
hostel that catered to Polish
Jews, in transit from the
Soviet Union, who did not
intend to remain in Poland.
Most did not originally come
from Kielce.
The documentary, aired on
Station AVRO and was pro-
duced by Pieter var
Varekamp.

Paris (JTA) — Quatar
recently established diplo-
matic relations with the
Soviet Union, in reaction to
the United States decision to
not sell arms to the oil-rich
nation.
Quatar wanted to purchase
the sophisticated Stinger
missiles which are sold to
Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi
Arabia.
The State Department criti-
cized Qatar and threatened it
with economic sanctions for
its recent acquisition of 13
U.S.-made Stinger missiles in
violation of U.S. law. The
Stingers were part of a CIA
shipment of 20 missiles seiz-
ed and distributed by opposi-,
tion groups in Iran.

Sunday. UNIFIL was estab-
lished by the Security Coun-
cil in 1978 to maintain the
peace in southern Lebanon.
