Joel Jacob prepares for a long workout on Cass Lake.

Although Jacob says he was
an average swimmer, he did
swim for Lathrup's varsity.
"That's why I encourage
kids to get involved in sports,"
he continues. "You don't have
to be the best. But it gives you
a sense of finishing things.
And you have to start and
finish all kinds of things
throughout life. You start pro-
jects in your home or within
a community. And you carry

at it and I think that was a
key to why I'm successful in
these other things. Because
that was my first experience
of really being pushed to my
limits .. .
"I like a challenge. I know
when I went to college, join-
ing the rowing team, even
taking classes or extra-
curicular activities and now
getting involved in the com-
munity, these are things
where other people say, 'Well,
I don't have enough time. I'm
busy.' We're all busy. But
there is always enough time.
There's enough time to go to
Israel. There's enough time to
do all kinds of great things.
We have a wonderful oppor-

success in national clay court
tennis tournaments last
week.

Miller won once in singles
play at the boys-12 event in
Winston-Salem, N.C. He and
partner Doug Klekamp of
Cincinnati, the sixth seeds,
reached the doubles quarter-
finals. They won three mat-
ches before dropping a two-set
match to Joshua Hausman
and Derek Pope.

Hoffman played in the
boys-14 in Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla. He won three times then
lost in the round of 16. Dan-
ny Friedman also qualified
for the event but won no
matches.

Jennifer Goldfarb qualified
for the girls-16 in Virginia
Beach, Va., but scored no
victories.

Miller will play in the
boys-12 nationals in San
Diego this weekend. Hoffman
and Friedman will par-
ticipate in the boys-14 na-
tionals in Shreveport, La.
