Israel Stresses Man's
Relationship With God

RABBI ELIEZER COHEN

Special to The Jewish News

M

an looks up into the
hot glare of the sun
and squints. Then
he looks down and kicks the
dust. All his work and hopes
for survival disappeared in
the drought. He realizes his
dependence on outside forces
for survival. Illness, war and
drought bring home to man
the mystery of mortal
existence.
The Torah tells us that
Eretz Yisrael, the land of
Israel, "is not like the land of
Egypt where you plant your
seed and irrigate; but rather

Shabbat Ekev:
Deuteronomy
7:12-11:25,
Isaiah 49:14-51:13

by the rains of the heavens
(the land of Israel) drinks
water" (Deut. 11:10-11).
Unlike Egypt, which was
fed by the annual flooding of
the Nile River, the land pro-
mised and given to the Jewish
People is a land that em-
phasizes man's dependence on
God and minimizes man's ar-
rogance; one does his best and
must rely on the help of a
merciful and caring God.
This week's Torah portion
teaches us that Eretz Yisrael
is "a land which the Lord
your God is concerned about.
The eyes of the Lord your God
are constantly upon it, from

Young Israel of Oak-Woods.

Here's what's waiting for you.

the beginning of the year un-
til the end of the year" (Deut.
11:12).
The Creator of the vast
universe, the God who main-
tains and sustains existence
itself is interested in and con-
cerned about the needs and
behavior of man.
Therefore, man is depen-
dent upon God and a partner
with God. And this relation-
ship is manifest particularly
in Eretz Yisrael.
Israel is not a land like any
other. It is a land invested
with the divine ability to
teach its inhabitants to fulfill
their potential as the Chosen
People. The difficulties of
Israel can be seen as an op-
portunity for Israelis to
realize their own capacity to
live a righteous, godly, truly
Jewish life.
Viewed from this perspec-
tive, it is particularly crucial
that the crisis of religious
polarization and sectarian
hatred in Israel be healed so
that the Jews themselves,
bound by mutual love and
respect, can meet the other
challenges of life as a truly
united and holy nation.
