In New Poll
Tel Aviv (JTA) — If Knesset

elections were held now, the
Labor Party would beat the
Likud bloc by a margin of just
over 6 percent, according to a
telephone poll conducted by
the Decima Co. among 500
Israeli Jews in mid-July.
Labor would win 40.5 per-
cent of the vote, and Likud
would get 34.3 percent.

The message received by
that large bloc of undecided
Israeli voters (18 percent, ac-
cording to some estimates) is
that the king is flaky over an
issue on which they demand
cast-iron guarantees.
As speculation about the
possible Hussein decision
hardened last week, Peres
sent a flurry of messages
through various diplomatic
channels pleading with the
king to exercise restraint and
warning of the danger to
peace prospects.
In an attempt to salvage
something from the damage
after the announcement,
Peres lamely told reporters
that he regards - Hussein's
statement as "more declar-
ative than practical!'
According to Dr. Yossi
Olmert, a senior political
scientist at Aviv Univer-
sity, the king's statement was
bad news indeed for Peres.
"The Labor Party is now
left with two unpalatable
choices," he told me. "Either
it can cling to the 'Jordanian
option' and lose credibility, or
it can allow its dovish wing to
start talking about a PLO op-
tion, which will hardly be a
vote-catcher.
"Hussein's speech has also
made life difficult for
(Secretary of State) George
Shultz, who regarded the 'Jor-
danian option' as a central
element in his Middle East
peace initiative.
