Jimmie Sims and Daniell Lit-
tleton, 72, all of Detroit also
said they have had good ex-
periences working with Jews.
While most blacks still view
Jews as different from the
white community in general,
this gap may be narrowing.
Darryl Johnson, 21, of
Detroit, said "It's all over,
everywhere," when asked if
he had heard of problems bet-
ween blacks and Jews in
Chicago. Yet as he continued
discussing the issue, it
became clear that Johnson
was speaking of tensions bet-
ween blacks and whites, not
blacks and Jews.
"There's a lot of ignorance
between blacks and whites,"
he said. "Everybody is
stereotyping everybody else."
Eric Bell of Detroit also ad-
dressed the issue as one bet-
ween blacks and whites,
rather than blacks and Jews.
Bell, 21, said one specific
thing he recently heard about
Jews was from a friend, who
commented that there are a
lot of Jews in Detroit and that
they have a lot of money.
Bell said he put no credence
in the remark.
One factor often cited as in-
creasing recent tensions bet-
ween blacks and Jews is the
presidential campaign of the
Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Several blacks interviewed
expressed surprise at Jewish
hostility toward Jackson. One
even said he felt more
positively about Jews
specifically because of the
Baptist minister.
"I heard Jesse Jackson
speaking about this (black-
Jewish relations)," said
25-year-old Michael Harold of
Detroit. "And I was really en-
couraged. I felt like our two
communities have common
goals and that we can work
together?'

Andrew Silow Carroll of the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
