Because of its location in Israel, Haifa University has the largest Arab
and Druse student population of any Israeli university. The overseas pro-
gram attracts about 70 students per year.

7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.

They can also be divided
along Zionist/non-Zionist
lines.
Beit Midrash leara (or
BMT, as it's popularly
known) is definitely not the
place for someone who wants
to rest for a year. It is prob-
ably the most structured,
Zionisitic yeshiva in Jeru-
salem for foreign students.
The 140 students have
classes from early morning
until 9:45 p.m., given in
English and Hebrew. But
there is also an interesting
mix of social work programs,
touring and innovative proj-
ects, coordinated with the ar-
my and development towns.
"Every Tuesday afternoon,
the boys spread out to all
parts of Jerusalem to do
volunteer work in hospitals,
in depressed areas as 'big
brothers' and in old age
homes," says Rabbi Moshe
Horowitz, the school's
director.
Also, unique in the yeshiva
world, it takes non-'Talmudic
Jewish studies seriously.
There are regular lectures —
followed by exams — on Bi-
ble, prophets, Jewish history,
Jewish philosophy, and so on.
Students receive college
credit which is transferable
abroad.
The school is technically a
two- or three-year program,

but students can come for
one year only. Most come
straight from high school.
The $5,400 fee includes tui-
tion, dormitory, meals, tour-
ing and medical insurance.

World Zionist Organization,

Avenue, New York, New York.
Phone number: (212) 752-
0600.
There are many other ex-
cellent yeshivot for men and
women, for those with strong
backgrounds in Talmud and
for those without. However, I
could find no one who could
offer sound advice on how to
choose among them from a
distance.

The United Kibbutz Move-
ment offers a variety of in-
teresting programs, besides
the option of simply volun-
teering for a year to work on
a kibbutz.
Project Discovery is a five-
week program for men and
women, 18 to 40, that in-
cludes kibbutz, work on an ar-
cheological dig and touring.
It is a summer program that
costs $1750 (travel included).
There is also a summer kib-
butz ulpan, available at five
different kibbutzim (in-
cluding Einaurim, a reli-
gious one). This combines
ulpan and kibbutz work and
