and owned by Al Baloloy.
IT'S SUNDAY Funday
again Aug. 14, at Southfield
Civic Center Plaza . . . 1 p.m.
to 7 p.m. . . . with the summer
fun fest a bevy of entertain-
ment, food and merriment for
the entire family.
Theme is "Southfield — A
Family Affair," highlighting
Cedar Point's "The Amaze-
ment Park Revue" and a
mini jazz festival starring the
Ursula Walker/Buddy Budson
Trio and Wayne State Univer-
sity Jazz Band.
Game booths a la carnival-
style will be operated by
local,non-profit
clubs,
organizations
and
neighborhood associations .. .
Events will include rides on a
miniature train, strolling
mimes and jugglers, a magi-
cian and "fun characters" in
costume . . . Southfield Fire
Department will sponsor safe-
ty games and the Southfield
Police Department will have
safety puppet shows and
McGruff, the crime preven-
tion mascot.
National Frog Jumping
Championships will be held
. . . Croakmaster John Close
returning with his stable of
giant California leopard
bullfrogs . . . The competition,
as immortalized by Mark
Twain, allows festival-goers to
try their luck at jumping
their frog the farthest.
DON'T KNOW of any
other restaurant nitery with
the variety of daily entertain-
ment as that at the
Rhinoceros on Riopelle and
Franklin in Detroit . . . Seems
like owner Norman Schwartz
has filled the gamut for
everyone . . . at all times . : .
with someone different
almost each day . . . cocktail
hour 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and
9 p.m. to close.
Only ones with consecutive
runs are Pinky Smith Jazz
Trio Thursday and Friday
eves and Hari Paris Top 40
Saturday from 10 p.m., and
Sunday 9 p.m. . . . Monday
night is pianist Juanita Farr,
jazz and vocals; Susan Lane
Tuesday eves with her
showtunes; and Nancy Wood's
jazz showtunes on Wednesday
nights . . . Early cocktail
hours have Vince Shandor on
piano Mondays, Juanita Farr
Tuesday and Saturday; Earl
Van Riper Wednesday; Nancy
Wood Friday; and variety of
harpist or pianist on Sunday.
SINCE 1984, almost
$50,000 in scholarships to
culinary arts students have
been given by the Lark
restaurant . . . Money comes
from proceeds of the annual
Michigan Chili Cookoff,
which incidentally will be
held this year, Sept. 11 at the
Lark.
