Atlanta Jews
Troubled

New York (JTA) — Jewish
groups and civil rights ac-
tivists in the Atlanta area
have grown increasingly con-
cerned about the escalating
racist vandalism and other
hate crimes there.
Last week police rescinded
the marcher's permit issued
to the Ku Klux Klan-led Na-
tional Movement because of a
perceived threat from en-
raged counter-demonstrators.
The coalition was to march
from the Georgia State Capi-
tal building, at the foot of a
statue of Tom Watson to the
free speech area opposite the
convention center where the
Demoncratic National Con-
vention was held.
Watson was a U.S. senator
who, after the trial of Leo
Frank, instigated much of the
hysteria that resulted in
Frank's lynching. Watson is
considered a hero in Georgia.
Concern over the growing
permissive atmosphere for
anti-Semitic and anti-black
sentiment increased when
the city council of Stone
Mountain, Ga., voted
unanimously to name a
parcel of land in Stone Moun-
tain State Park for James
Venable, former Imperial
Wizard of the National
Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.
Venable has ties to other hate
groups.
Venable's family once
owned nearly the entire
acreage of the park, and it
was the 83-year-old Venable,
a former mayor of Stone
Mountain, who gave the land
for the park.
Although ADL Southeast
Regional Director Stuart
Lewengrub protested the
decision, it was Venable
himself who ended the con-
troversy by saying that he
didn't want the honor.

Britain Expels
Five Israelis

London (JTA) — Britain ex-
pelled five Israelis who were
alleged to be counterterrorist
agents of Mossad, Israel's
foreign intelligence service
last week. They had been
linked to a- Palestinian double
agent, 28-year-old Ismail
Sawan, now serving an
11-year prison sentence for il-
legal possession of arms and
explosives.
Unlike the Israeli Embassy
attache deported last month,
these Israelis, whose families
were also expelled, had no
diplomatic status.
British security forces
reportedly confirmed that the
five left as a result of direct
pressure from the British gov-
ernment.
