I NEWS I FEN13Y-STEIN 553-9966 Inquiry Irks Swiss Jews Geneva (JTA) — The impen- ding visit of former Jewish Agency Treasurer Akiva Lewinsky, who is coming to Switzerland from Israel to trace unclaimed money deposited by Jews in Swiss bank accounts during World War II, has upset and angered the Swiss Jewish community. Lewinsky claims that the deposits were more than the 10 million Swiss francs ($6.54 million) already reimbursed to Jewish organizations, the newspaper Le Courrier re- ported Sunday. Lewinsky said that he is not accusing the banks or other institutions of trying to profit from the unclaimed accounts. The Jewish Gazette in Basel reminded Lewinsky that "the limits fixed for the claim of such funds expired 14 years ago." Willy Guggenheim, secre- tary general of the Swiss Jewish Federation, said the Jewish Agency should know the issue is dead. But authorities in Bern, the Swiss capital, admit that people still go to the banks to reclaim funds. In 1964, the banks gave 9.74 million Swiss francs to the Ministry of Justice and Police, the depositors having disappeared. Then, 7,000 people claim- ing to be heirs presented themselves at the banks. On- ly a few had credible claims. In 1975, the Swiss govern- ment paid 2 million francs to Jewish charitable organiza- tions. Arabs Favor Communists Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israeli Arabs who intend to vote in the Nov. 1 Knesset elections will be casting votes for the Communist Party, according to a poll by the east Jerusalem weekly Al-Biadir as-Siyasi. More than 27 per- cent of the 1,215 Israeli Arabs polled said they do not intend to vote. The poll, which was pub- lished last weekend, showed no appreciable change in voting preferences since the last elections, despite the Palestinian uprising. If the elections were held at the time of the poll, the Hadash Communist Party would command 21.48 per- cent of the Arab vote if elec- tions at the time of the survey, followed by the Labor Party with 11.85 percent. The Likud Party would win 5.20.
