BIRMINGHAM Maccabi Team Edged In Hoops The Maccabi basketball team was beaten at the buzzer by Detroit Nor- thwestern High School's reserves, 62-60, at St. Cecelia's in Detroit on July 22. "It was a very entertaining game," said Maccabi coach Burt Hurshe. The Maccabi squad took a 5-0 lead, but soon fell behind and played catch-up for most of the game. Lead guard Matt Hoffman went to the bench with his fourth foul — it takes six to foul out — in the second quarter, as Northwestern took a 32-26 halftime lead. Northwestern's lead grew to 10 points in the third quarter. A three-point play by Joey Hurshe, assisted by Hoffman, cut the margin to six, but Northwestern built its lead t_o 11 after three quarters. Hoffman and backcourt mate Jamie Stewart led a final comeback. A pair of Stewart free throws made it 60-60 with nine seconds left. A near-steal almost gave the Maccabi team the last shot. Instead, Northwestern drove the floor and scored at the buzzer for the win. Hoffman finished with 26 points, hitting four, three- point shots. Stewart added 14 points, Hurshe 11 and Brad Rosenberg nine, while Darin Frank grabbed ten rebounds. "We played hard," said coach Hurshe. "We lost momentum two or three times and regained it." Defensively, added Hurshe, "we were weak in the transi- tion game, getting back on defense . . . I was very happy with our defense in the half- court situations." Hurshe hopes to play another game'at St. Cecelia's before the team leaves for the North American Maccabi youth games in August.
