.111FISCI•IIER ELECT _ RAUL 11.1 Qualifications Discrimination Committee has redrawn posters • last spring's posters and has plans to place them on every other Metro subway car for a month. The posters were withdrawn after long negotia- tions with Metro board officials. One of the original posters showed Israeli soldiers beating an Arab civilian. The caption read: "Soviet Union, South Africa, Israel: One Standard for Human Rights?' Another, with the same photo read: "Your tax dollars at work . . . please call your con- gressman and ask him to 'just say no' to unlimited funding for Israel." Despite protests from groups like CAMERA, it is expected that the latest batch of posters will be approved by the Metro board. _ Bush Pledges Arms Stockpile In Israel WOLF BLITZER Special to The Jewish News W ashington — Going beyond existing U.S. policy, Vice Presi- dent George Bush has pledged to stockpile "dual- purpose" U.S. military equip- ment in Israel if elected presi- dent in November. Bush: Challenging Democrats. His nine-page "Middle East Position Paper" released by his campaign represents a dramatic challenge to Demo- cratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis for support in the pro-Israeli community, including American Jews. Bush's very pro-Israeli paper outlines in considerable detail what his position will be if elected president. Much of the document focuses at- tention on the U.S.-Israeli strategic relationship, en- hanced during the Reagan years in office. Israeli officials and other pro-Israeli political activists were especially pleased that Bush had pledged to preposi- tion heavy combat equipment in Israel. Israeli defense of- ficials have long sought such a commitment from Washing- ton in order to avoid the necessity of appealing for another U.S. emergency resupply airlift to Israel in the event of another war. U.S. strategic planners are also interested in pursuing this area of strategic coopera- tion since the U.S., too, could find itself in need of heavy military equipment in that part of the world. By having it in Israel, the U.S. also would avoid a costly and militarily and politically risky airlift from Western Europe or the United States. Bush has now pledged to move forward on this issue. By establishing appropriate policies and institutions," the paper says, "the goal of strategic cooperation with Israel has been achieved. It will be sustained through continued security and economic assistance to Israel, and expansion of existing elements of strategic coopera- tion including joint exercises, pre-positioning of dual-use stockpiles (including combat equipment, spare parts, and ammunition), intelligence sharing and contingency planning." - - Regarding the Arab-Israeli peace process, the paper states: "We oppose the crea- tion of an independent Palestinian state; its establishment is inimical to the security interests of Israel, Jordan and the U.S. We will not support the crea- tion of any Palestinian entity tht could place Israel's securi- ty in jeopardy." Bush, after endorsing the Camp David peace process, says that "ultimately, direct negotiations are the only viable means of securing peace between Israel and its neighbors. The U.S. cannot and will not impose a settle- ment, nor will we be party to any effort to do so through a multilateral entity." In connection with a PLO role in the peace process, the paper says the Bush ad- ministration will not support any PLO involvement "unless it recognizes Israel's right to exist, accepts UN Resolutions 242 and 338, renounces ter- rorism and removes language from its charter demanding Israel's destruction!' • Assistant Oakland County Prosecutor, Appeals Division • Former Law Clerk, Oakland County Circuit Judge Hilda R.
