Blindness Not
A Handicap

rIbl Aviv (JTA) — A blind
Palestinian says he drove a
street car in Jidda, the Saudi
Arabian city on the Red Sea.
But that was before the
50-year-old former Gaza resi-
dent had the sight of one eye
restored last year through the
surgical skill of Dr. Zvi Dafne
of Ashkelon.
The Palestinian has re-
quested permission to return
to Israel for further surgery
in the hope of restoring the
sight of his other eye, Ma'ariv
reported Sunday.
According to the newspaper,
Dafne was stunned at his first
interview with his patient
when he asked the man his
occupation.
"I am a street car driver in
Jidda" was the reply.
Asked how he managed, be-
ing almost totally blind, the
motorman explained, "I know
the route like the back of my
hand. I always take either my
wife or a friend with me. They
tell me when to brake and
when to start up again. They
tell me if there's another vehi-
cle in the way, and tell me the
color of the traffic light."

U.N. Reinstates
Orthodox Woman

United Nations (JTA) — A
Jewish woman, whose con-
tract with the United Na-
tions Development Program
(UNDP) was not renewed last
April because she was a Sab-
bath observer who left work
early on Fridays in the winter
months, was reinstated
Monday.
Contacted at her office,
Danielle Hartweg, an
Austrian citizen who has
been working as a computer
operator at the UNDP for the
last two years, said, "I am
very happy to be back at work
and I am very satisfied the
way things were worked out."
