Tel Aviv (JTA) — In the first six months since the Palesti- nian uprising began in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Force has killed 156 Arabs and arrested more than 8,000 others. Violent incidents averaged 16 a day in the period from December 9, 1987 to June 9, 1988. These figures, which do not include additional cases be- ing checked, were reported by the weekly magazine Koteret Rashit recently, which cited an IDF spokesperson as the source of the information. The IDF figures do not in- clude Palestinians killed by Israeli civilians in the territories. The Palestinians claim to have suffered 198 fatalities. One Israeli soldier and one civilian have been killed in the same period as a direct result of the uprising. • Duette Shades • Woven Woods Bonn (JTA) — An East Berlin court has imposed stiff sentences on five young van- dals who desecrated a Jewish cemetery, further fueling the belief that East Germany is trying to demonstrate good will toward Jewish com- munities worldwide, and especially in the United States, with whom East Ger- many wants desperately to improve trade relations. Five unidentified youths were given prison terms last Monday ranging from two- and-a-half to six years, described by the West Ger- man press as extremely severe sentences. - The five were found guilty of desecrating the Jewish cemetery at Prenzlauerberg, where 222 gravestones were overturned. According to East German press reports, the vandals gathered regularly at the cemetery to display Nazi sym- bols and discuss fascist ideas. • Custom Rugs • Carpeting • Wood Floors The Great Cover-Up 851-1125 — CUSTOM ORDER WALLPAPER - Everyday Discounts Up To 40% OFF TIFFANY PLAZA 32855 NORTHWESTERH HWY.
