SERVING DETROIT'S JEWISH COMMUNITY

Palestinian Plank
Not A Dead Issue

DAVID FRIEDMAN

Special to The Jewish News

Atlanta (JTA) — Jewish leaders
this week applauded the withdrawal
of the Rev. Jesse Jackson's proposed
platform calling for the establishment
of a Palestinian homeland.
"I'm glad it was withdrawn," said
Congressman Sander Levin, D-
Southfield, the state's only Jewish
representative on the platform com-
mittee. "It was a misguided plank."
His brother, Senator Carl Levin, said
Monday that Democrats should op-
pose the plank because "only the par-

ties in the Middle East can negotiate
Mideast peace. We can't solve those .
problems here."
Jackson's proposal on Palestinian
self-determination was withdrawn
without a vote at the Democratic Na-

Detroit's Jewish organizations
and agencies were challenged Tues-
day night to change the way they
serve the community.
The 28-page report of the Jewish
Welfare Federation's Commission on
Identity and Affiliation was made
public at a special meeting of the
Federation board of governors. The
three-year study recommended
sweeping program changes and inter-
agency cooperation to address the
needs of Jewish families which in-
creasingly include single-parent
units, singles and the divorced.
David Page, who chaired the
45-member commission, told the au-
dience that "a generation ago, we
would never have envisioned the need
for such a report. The community liv-

ed together in a small area. Now we
are scattered all over town. With
nuclear families, our children are
scattered all over the world .. .
"Divorce, single parents, inter-
marriage — these were almost
unheard of. Now we have to decide if
we are going to have the same
(Jewish) affiliation as our parents a
generation ago!"
Some of the 77 recommendations
of the subcommittees include:

Education
Encourage programs like Jewish
Experiences For Families and infor-
mal educational experiences, such as
weekend retreats, summer camping,
theater and arts, with the aim of
educating the total family;
Continue support for day school
education, including the new Reform
