A New Hotel In Southfield
Has Unique, 'Complete' Style

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

ou might say the new
(Compri) Hotel on
American Drive in
Southfield is somewhat in-
dicative of the way local
owners Mike George and Jim-
my Jonna live their lives .. .
impeccable and fine.
Compri is a French word
meaning "complete" . . . and
the brackets around the
hotel's name are also French
symbols for "inclusive."
The spacious but intimate
lounging areas wih levels of
sofas, setees, tables and well-
padded chairs, are replete
with fine appointments .. .
Marble floors, large windows,
glass block, casual bar,
library stacked with books,
magazines and newspapers,
desks with credit card
telephones, etc.
The (Compri) concept is an
interesting one . . . with rates
including full cooked-to-order
breakfast, cocktail reception
5 p.m.-7 p.m., late night snack
10 p.m.-midnight, use of an
enclosed meeting room with
. conference phone, lounge and
TV screen, jacuzzi, sauna,
workout rooms, heated indoor
pool, etc.
Some 200 large guest rooms
also make up the contem-
porary seven-story (Compri)
Hotel in Southfield . . . with
queen or two double-sized
beds, queen-bedded parlor
suites, two telephones, etc.
The (Compri) Club lobby is
a 5,000-square-foot living
room-style showcase area .. .
Personalized service is a high
standard and (Compri) Club,
which is also a perfect place
to enjoy breakfast, achieves
this.
The all-inclusive concept
was introduced in 1984 .. .
and (Compri) here is the first
of its kind in Michigan and
the 13th nationwide . . .
Prism Management of Dallas,
lbxas, runs the Southfield
operation for Mike and Jim-
my . . . (Compri) hotels in
Eagen, Minn., Schaumberg,
Ill. and Los Angeles, plus Om-
ni, Sheraton and Ramada
Hotels throughout the United
States are also operated by
Prism.
Newest addition to the
growing (Compri) Hotel net-
work opened here June 1 .. .
with personification of guest
interest and comfort as key
words . . . Development of the
(Compri) Club lounge area
open to all guests is the result
of a four-year study . . .

y

Travelers wanted a wider
range of service and facilities
to make staying in an un-
familiar city more comfor-
table . . . It has a well train-
ed and attentive staff like
Louis Robbins, actually
general manager, but called
(Compri) director much as a
club head would be titled .. .
and they don't come much
better than Andrea Miller,
director of sales, and Dorothy
Bacon, sales manager.
Recent grand opening
brought oogles and ahs as
visitors gazed in strange awe
at the large (Compri) Club
lobby . . . Earl Robbins, Louis'
dad, former Detroiter of 37
years ago, here from Houston,
Thxas; 97-year-old Ida Messer,
Earl's mother, also a former
localite, now residing in
Miami, Fla.; Morris
Margulies, Herb Carson, 'Ibm
Leven, Denise Alexander, Les
and Sue Goldstein, Sid Lantz
and son Scott Lantz, J.
Leonard Hyman, Marilyn
Niks, Vivian and Steve
Hurite, Jerry Tobin, Don
Gross, Roman Gronkowsky,
Sherry Sadeen, Bobbi Visco,
Karen and Southfield Mayor
Don Fracassi, and so many,
many more.
Hors d'oeuvres, cocktails,
cheese, fruits and piano music
inside . . . A huge tent outside
was set up with live music,
dance floor, long line of foods.
Naturally, (Compri) was
built by Jonna Construction,
which can add this among
building treasures of which it
can be proud.
(Compri) Hotel in one word
is what you might call Mike
George and Jimmy Jonna .. .
Class.

ROVING REVIEWERS

Adrian and Marcus Williams
write about the new Thai Inn
on S. Rochester Road in
Rochester Hills . . . "The very
relaxed atmosphere has a
beautiful effect. All tables
display a silk floral arrange-
ment of native Thai flowers.
The waitresses wear silk-
woven skirts from Thailand.
"Tai Inn seats 86 and all
dishes are prepared by Chef
Somporn Sorn Jeow of
Thailand . . . She has been
cooking Thai food for over 25
years at some of the finest
restaurants in Bangkok.
"You can start off with a
cocktail while munching on
shrimp chips. Then choose
from a variety of appetizers
such as gbd Mun, a unique
blend of seasonings, minced
chicken beaten with Thai
curry, fried and served with

cucumber sauce, and Kalipop,
baked dough stuffed with
chicken, potatoes and curry.
Very delicious and served
nowhere else in this region.
Tom Yum Koong soup would
follow. It is a sour-sweet clear
soup with chicken, green
onions, mushrooms, lime
juice, lemon grass, chili and
hot peppers.
"All the entrees sounded
wonderful and we would have
liked to try them all.
However, we wisely let the
chef prepare her favorites of
Gai Pad Ped, sauteed chicken
with Thai hot curry, eggplant,
mushrooms, green pepper,
onion and coconut milk; Pla
Jien, fried fish topped with a
mixture of shredded meat,
shrimp, mushrooms, ginger
and green onion (my favorite);
and Pud Thai, traditional rice
stick noodles with shrimp
eggs, bean sprouts and crun-
chy peanuts to make this a
most memorable dish.
"Thai Inn is owned by
Maria Nguyen, and opened
its doors about a month ago.
Thai food is good, healthy fare
and not necessarily served in
fiery fashion. It is creatively
spiced, but not hot. Thai food
is considered better because it
contains no preservatives, on-
ly natural ingredients."
TYPO DEPT. ... That's
under $4 at Rialto Cafe, south
of Nine Mile Rd. . . . with
Jewish News coupons . . . not
under $14.
JACKIE MASON, one of
the hottest tickets in show biz
today, will be at Pine Knob
Music Theatre this Monday,
8 p.m. . . . Pavilion only
seating is $25.
His Tony Award-winning
one-man Broadway show,
"The World According To Me,"
has been playing to sell-out,
standing-room-only crowds
since its opening in New York
last December . . . and has
broken all attendance records
for a Broadway show in the
last five years . . . His Warner
Brothers album of the same
name has been and continues
to be a smash bestseller coast-
to-coast as has his highly suc-
cessful book version publish-
ed by Simon and Schuster.
Born and raised on the
lower east side of New York
City, Jackie grew up sur-
rounded by rabbis . . . Having
become a rabbi himself at the
age of 25, it seemed that he
would continue in his father's
footsteps as had his father
before him . . . But this was
not to be . . . Jackie soon
