and then disappear forever.
Therefore, the relative com-
merical success this past sum-
mer of two local films that
provided a uniquely Israeli
perspective — "Late Summer
Blues" and "Don't Give a
Damn" — was both unusual
and encouraging.
"Late Summer Blues," an
insightful 'nostalgia piece'
which looks at a group of
Israeli high school youth in
1970 prior to their induction
into the army, cost $400,000,
$70,000 of which was covered
by education ministry fund
monies. To date, the film has
been seen by 300,000 viewers
in Israel, recouped all of its
expenses and even showed a
modest return, providng its
backers with a 150 percent
profit on their original invest-
ment. Finally, it has been in-
vited to 12 foreign film
festivals, a development
which Baruch Dinar calls
"nothing less than
remarkable:"
"Don't Give a Damn," a film
based on Dahn Ben Amotz's
novel detailing the hardships
experienced by a disabled IDF
veteran, cost $500,000 to
make. The film has sold over
350,000 tickets to date and
was lauded for its
authenticity.
Yet the conditions under
which these two films were
made is no less telling concer-
ning the risks and burdens in-
volved in making "serious"
Israeli cinema.
While "Late Summer
Blues" was being shot,
everyone involved with the
making of the film worked on
deferred-payment contracts:
they would be paid if and
when the movie made money.
Director Renen Schorr said
that he had to obtain various
loans since he had no money
to pay his rent. Schorr, the
seven lead actors, the screen-
writer, the producer and the
crew have all since been reim-
bursed for their labors, but on
a scale which simply doesn't
reach anywhere close to the
standards of film industries
elsewhere.
On at least one point, there
is consensus throughout the
film industry: the role taken
by Israel Television in pro-
moting and funding original
Israeli films has thus far been
minimal. Zev Birger, chair-
man of the Fund for the Pro-
motion of Israeli Quality
Films, maintains that Israel
Television does nothing to en-
courage Isreali filmmakers of
drama. "TV survives from
public taxes and should be a
major influence in supporting
original Israeli films. Instead
they sit back and play no
role."
