"I thought things would be
emotionally calmer if I went
somewhere else," he says, ad-
ding that he never planned to
head a new congregation here
because, "To start from
scratch is so much more dif-
ficult."
But start from scratch is ex-
actly what some members of
Temple Beth El decided to do.
While Rabbi Schwartz was
still at Beth El, temple
members had formed a
chavurah. "It was," Rabbi
Schwartz says, "the kind of
thing you dream of as a rab-
bi. All too often the rabbi
becomes the focal point. But
now the congregants were do-
ing the services. It really
made it like a family."
After Rabbi Schwartz left
Beth El, members of the
chavurah organized a
farewell dinner for him. Some
550 persons attended the din-
ner, which was held at the
Troy Hilton Inn.
"But after the dinner, they
felt they didn't want this to
end," the rabbi says. "It was
too good a feeling."
So they began looking into
starting a new temple, with
Rabbi Schwartz at its helm.
The Schneids remember at-
tending an organizational
meeting to plan the new con-
gregation. Invited by friends
who knew of their affection
for Rabbi Schwartz, the
Schneids describe the gather-
ings as dinners or coffees
where they felt very much at
ease.
Rabbi Schwartz remained
cautious.
"Starting a congregation
can be a very, long painful
process," he says. So he asked
the founders to do some
research. He told them to
come back with figures on
how many people were in-
terested. They also needed to
study locations for the temple,
he said.
They came back with a list
of 175 families and seven
possible temple sites. They
even obtained a Torah that
had been smuggled out of pre-
Nazi Germany. It was a gift
from a congregant who said
