Liver Transplant
Centers Okayed
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Health Ministry gave two
Israeli hospitals permission
to open liver-transplant
centers as soon as possible,
while suspending the certifi-
cation of another. Permission
was granted last week to the
Hadassah University Hospit-
al in Jerusalem and Beilinson
Hospital in Petach Tikvah,
which belongs to Kupat
Cholim, the Histadrut health
care agency.
Rambam Hospital in Haifa,
which last year became the
first and only hospital in
Israel licensed to perform the
delicate surgery, will no
longer do so.
Rambam Hospital shut
down its facility last week
when the head of its liver-
transplant center, American-
trained Dr. Yigal Kam,
returned to the United States.
Hadassah and Beilinson
hospitals have promised to
cooperate in their liver
transplant endeavors. A com-
puter center is being set up at
Beilinson to register donors
and match their tissues with
potential recipients. It will be
linked to the Hadassah
transplant center.
Hadassah Will
Replace Trees
Jerusalem — Hadassah has
announced that it will plant
100,000 trees to replace those
destroyed by arsonists widely
believed to be carrying out a
directive from Paletinian
leadership in the West Bank.
The announcement was
made by Hadassah National
President Ruth W. Popkin at
a meeting of the Zionist
General Council in
Jerusalem. "For every tree
that is destroyed by arson, we
will plant two," Popkin said.

Washington — The United
States Department of
Agriculture Forest Service
and the Jewish National
Fund, the agency responsible
for afforestation and land
reclamation in Israel, recent-
ly signed a memorandum of
agreement to examine all
aspects of fire management in
Israel.
The memorandum states
that the USDA Forest Service
recognizes that "there is an
urgent need to protect Israel's
forests from wildfire," and
sets as its purpose the evalua-
