Housed in a converted sail-
board shop, Maui Bagel is
reportedly "on the road to
everywhere: Lahaina, Kihei,
the Haleakaka crater and far-
flung Hana. Travelers from
around the world stop in on
their way up, down and
around the Valley Isle."
The shop's owners, two
couples originally from
Eugene, Oregon, first thought
of starting a snow cone
business on the island. Snow
cones evolved into bagels
because one of the wives, who
had grown up in New York,
had a fondness for the rolls.
Many Hawaiians, said a
Maui Bagel owner, "seem to
have a sweet tooth, and
especially like cinnamon-
raisin bagels with strawberry
cream cheese."

Some Jews Are
Wary Of Bentsen

Some blacks are angry
about Michael Dukakis'
choice of Lloyd Bentsen as his
running mate, some anti-
abortionists are fuming —
and some Jews are wary.
According to the New York
Times, several officials of
Jewish groups say Bentsen
has been a friend of Israel.
But they questions his posi-
tions on other issues, notably
mandatory prayer in public
schools.
Bentsen is "a choice we .. .
feel comfortable with," said
Mark J. Pelavin, director of
policy planning for the
American Jewish Congress.

Lesbian Rabbi
Quits

A rabbi in St. Paul, Minn.,
an avowed lesbian, claims she
has resigned her post because
of pressure about her sexual
preferences, according to the
Jewish women's magazine,
Lilith.
"Leaving the temple has
ultimately to do with my sex-
ual orientation," said Rabbi
Stacy Offner of St. Paul's Mt.
Zion Temple.
But a spokesman for the
congregation said the rabbi's
"employment difficulties had
nothing to do with Offner's
sexuality."
Offner had come to Mt. Zion
as an assistant rabbi in 1984.
She was promoted to full rab-
bi this year. According to
Lilith, Offner has been "open
and outspoken" about her
lesbianism.
Some members of Mt. Zion
may leave the congregation in
protest Offner's treatment.
