Israeli Firm Denies
Pentagon Wrongdoing

WOLF BLITZER

Special to The Jewish News

W

ashington — An Is-
raeli-owned mortar
manufacturer in
Pennsylvania has denied any
wrongdoing in winning Pen-
tagon contracts. Poju Zablu-
dowicz, whose family owns
Pocal Industries of Scranton,
Pennsylvania, said he has no
idea why U.S. Federal
authorities were in-
vestigating his company.
From his home in Caesarea,
Israel, Zabloudowicz insisted
that there was no justification
for any such probe. "We are
very surprised about this
whole thing," he said. "We
don't understand what's go-
ing on."
He noted that Pocal had
won contracts only with the
U.S. Army, and not with the
U.S. Navy or Marine Corps.
The major focus of the
massive Federal investigation
into alleged Pentagon fraud
in arms procurement is on the
activities of former Assistant
Secretary of the Navy Melvyn
R. Paisley, who served from
1981 until April 1987.
An FBI search warrant
served on Paisley's suburban
Washington home and re-
leased publicly recently listed
Pocal as one of numerous U.S.
and foreign defense firms
with suspected ties to Paisley.
Another company under in-
vestigation is Mazlat, a joint
venture of Tadiran and Israel
Aircraft Industries. That com-
pany manufactures remotely
piloted vehicles, or
surveillance drones. The FBI
warrant said that Paisley is
believed to have a financial
interest in Mazlat.

Neither Pocal nor Mazlat
has been charged with any
crimes. Like numerous
American military com-
panies, they are being in-
vestigated apparently be-
cause of their alleged ties to
Paisley.
Pocal, while owned by the
Zabludowicz family, is an
American-incorporated com-
pany, registered in Penn-
sylvania. Its president, Sam
Reich, said that Paisley has
never been on Pocal's payroll.
Reich said that no one from
the FBI or any other U.S.
governmental agency has
contacted him or anyone else
associated with Pocal as part
of the investigation. Reich
also pointed out that Paisley,
as a high-ranking Navy of-
ficial, would have had no in-
fluence in the U.S. Army's
procurement policy.
The Zabludowicz family, in
addition to owning Pocal, is
also a major owner — to-
gether with Koor Industries
— of Soltam, the large Israeli
mortar manufacturer. But
Zabludowicz said that Soltara
is not directly associated with
Pocal.
He added that the recent
$3.4 million mortar contract
which the U.S. Army awarded
to a consortium involving
Soltam, Pocal and Martin
Marietta, a major U.S. mili-
tary contractor, was not being
investigated by the FBI.
U.S. press reports have said
that Paisley, after leaving the
Navy in 1987, served as a con-
sultant to several of the
largest U.S. defense contrac-
tors, including Martin
Marietta.
Paisley, who has not been
charged with any crimes, has
also denied any wrongdoing.

Israel Condemns Terror
Attack On Greek Ferry

Athens (JTA) — In a mes-
sage to Greek Foreign
Minister Karolos Papoulias,
Israel condemned the ter-
rorist attack on a Greek car
ferry and called for "strong
and adequate measures in
order to counter and elimi-
nate international terrorism
through determined actions."
The message from Israeli
Foreign Minister Shimon
Peres expressed condolences
over the loss of nine lives and
scores injured last week.
Although there has been no
confirmation on what group
was responsible, it appears
there may be a Palestinian

link to the action. A previous-
ly unknown group, calling
itself the Organization of the
Martyrs of the Popular Revo-
lution in Palestine, sent a
statement to a Western news
agency in Beirut claiming
responsibility.
The Palestine Liberation
Organization, however, has
strongly condemned the
attack.
Greek authorities are cir-
culating photographs of two
suspects, identified as
Mohammed Zozad and Ha-
moud Abdul Hamid, who
both entered Greece last May
on Lebanese passports.
