High-Flying Reunion
For Israel's Defenders
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
f it wasn't for you people,
there might not be an
Israel today" . .. Dave
Fink was among over 200
plus of those who remained
there that fought in the war
of 1948 . . . and recently at-
tended the 40th reunion of
Machal (Overseas Personnel
from around the world).
He heard this expression
constantly . . . and saw
fellows Dave hadn't seen in 40
years . . . Biggest thrill was
meeting three of the gents
who flew escort while he was
a B-17 gunner . . . Dave
previously only knew them by
waves of the hands . . . Im-
agine German Messer-
schmidts from World War II
flying escort for an Israeli
bomber!
CBS met about 50 of them
at Kennedy Airport in New
York and spent four days with
Machal . . . interviewing 12 to
15 selected from the Army,
Navy and Air Force for a
20-minute TV segment on
"Good Morning CBS," 9 a.m.
July 24.
Another highlight for Dave,
with six other buddies, was
visiting their old 69th
Squadron at Ramat David
about 40 miles north of Haifa
. . . It's still active . . . only
this time the high-tech planes
like F-4 and F-15 fighter
bombers are a lot different
from the "anything they could
get" Messerschmidts, Spit-
fires, Mustangs, etc.
In 1948, it was a con-
glomeration of every type of
World War II plane Israel
could get ahold of . . . So-
meone asked Dave if he'd
have liked an F-15 escorting
him on raids . . . and Dave
replied, "Are you kidding?
They sure wouldn't need us!"
CONGRATS. . . . to sister-
in-law and brother, Shirley
and Marvin Raskin . . . on
their 36th anniversary . . .
The first sofa they owned
back on Whitmore Avenue is
still around . . . in their base-
ment on Everett Avenue in
Southfield.
HUSBAND. AND WIFE
team joins Michigan Cancer
Foundation control division
here . . . Sandra Wolman,
M.D., is new associate
medical director . . . and Eric
Wolman, M.D., is vice presi-
dent of community programs.

ing July, 12:30 p.m. at Gold
Cion Restaurant, 10 Mile

pa Chi Alumni Fraternity of

FORMER DETROITER
Julie Grant Meyer, Mumford
and U-M grad, was named
first recipient of the Herbert
J. Garon Young Leadership
Award in New Orleans, La.
. . . given to one person bet-
ween age 25-40 who displays
a special commitment and
dedication to the Jewish com-
munity . . . Julie's hubby,
New Orleans barrister
Michael Meyer, is also a
former localite . . . She is the
daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
Joseph Grant in
Birmingham.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Shirley and Turk Prujan
(Prujansky) . . . in Los
Angeles.
ANNUAL Picnic On The
Grass XVI and Fine Arts Auc-
tion is Aug. 6, 6:30 p.m., at
Shotwell-Gustafson Pavilion
of Oakland University.
EX-LOCALITE Michael
,Pollack, now a New York state
corrections officer, was among
those called on to help answer
technical questions about a
Nazi identification card used
in helping to identify John
Demjanjuk as "Ivan The
Terrible;' convicted death
camp guard who allegedly
ran the Treblinka gas
chambers that killed 850,000
Jews during World War II . .
Michael was born and raised
in Oak Park . . . His mother,
Marcia Pollack, lives in.
Southfield.

thwestern, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
