EVERYTHING PUT IN
FRONT OF YOU.
You should avoid foods high in
cholesterol. It's a fact, a high
blood cholesterol level sub-
stantially increases your
chances of developing heart
disease. By cutting down on
fatty, rich foods, you can do
yourself a big favor. You could
lower your blood cholesterol
level and reduce your risk of
heart disease.

58 FRIDAY, JULY 15, 1988
oesn't look like much
. . . never did . . . and
it's hardly a place
other
cancel
you'd
engagements for . . . That is,
unless you know about Red
Devil on Fenkell, just east of
Greenfield.
It's the same place that peo-
ple tell about their parents
taking them as children .. .
Now they take their own
youngsters or go by
themselves . . . Only change
is the ownership . . . and
many say the food is better to-
day than it was before . . . Big
statement when you consider
that the Red Devil's food in
the '50s and '60s was con-
sidered among the best in its
price range.
People still come from all
over to eat the ample dishes
of owner Yahia (Ya-Ya)
Mawari, one-time chef in
Yemen and butcher in Dear-
born, who certainly knows his
food . . . So much so that it
has continually received rave
notices and awards . . . Red
Devil is considered among the
top values in restaurant
circles.
You won't believe the prime
rib unless seeing it . . . 32
ounces of choice meat that
would make the prime rib
lover's eyes oogle in excite-
ment as his or her taste buds
begin dancing with eager
anticipation.
Yahia's veal is the best that
can be gotten . . . and his
pasta dishes are superb offer-
ings . . . Yahia's pizza is still
rated among the tops . . . and
Red Devil's homemade soft
garlic breadsticks are a meal
in themselves with the sump-
tuous antipasto salad.
Our waitress, very pleasant
and efficient Hayat Karim,
brought us all these goodies
and Dee and Dr. Marshall
Shapiro couldn't believe their
eyes . . . Pam Smith took one
look at her prime rib and did
a gulping double take.
Red Devil has seating for
about 185, plus.a private din-
ing room for another 100 .. .
No more red checkered
tablecloths or vinyl place
mats . . . All white tablecloths
and white linen napkins now
. . . yet the place is still as in-
formal as can be . . . with red
flecked wallpaper, some fram-
ed pictures, large mural in
the entranceway, small bar in
back and very unassuming
ceiling chandeliers.
Red Devil opened its doors
back in 1954 . . . and Yahia
took over from the Bassonet-
ti family in March 1980.
The minestrone soup is the
kind you like to enjoy . . . full
bodied with oodles of
vegetables and no tomatoey
taste . . . Don't look for the
sign that used to be there .. .
Another one has taken its
place and although it seems
smaller, Marty Weinstock of
Radiant Sign, says its the
same size.
The kitchen at Red Devil is
ultra clean and large . . . This
is a restaurant where people
who go usually return.
Red Devil does a huge
carry-out business . . . but its
dining room still brings peo-
ple who know others . . . and
enjoy good dining at low
prices.
Before building up the
business, Yahia used to do
much of the cooking himself
. . . and still sometimes goes
into the kitchen . . . He con-
supervise
tinues to
everything that is served .. .
and is a stickler on all his
food being good and presented
properly.
Red Devil is open seven
days . . . Monday-Thursday,
11 to 11; Friday and Saturday,
11 to 12; and Sunday, 2 to 10
. . . All major credit cards are
accepted.
From the polite doorman
who stands outside watching
your car to the waitpersons
inside, Yahia has an act
together that meets much
approval.
"Why has Red Devil been
kept a secret?" asks Dr. Mar-
shall Shapiro after he and
Dee greet friends at other
tables . . . and then eat the
food with head-shaking
approval.
The Red Devil a secret? .. .
Generations won't buy that.
PEGASUS TAVERNA,
Greektown's upscale restau-
rant inside the Fisher
Building (aptly named
Pegasus in the Fisher), has
quality Greek and American
food and moderate prices
familiar to longtime Pegasus
patrons, but the atmosphere
is a totally new and delightful
experience.
The interior design is art
deco style with ornate brass,
glass and marble fittings that
look like they might have
been designed into the
original Fisher Building
plans . . . You immediately
feel that you're surrounded by
the grandeur that once
belonged only to the founders
of General Motors and Fisher
Body.
