anything and you can lose
everything!' Rivin was
stripped of his degrees the
next morning after telling
his director that he was
deciding to apply for a visa.
"I didn't apply yet!"
Luckily, it only took
Rivin four months and he
emigrated with his family
in 1975. Riviti believes
there is no logical reason
as to why it only took a
short time. He decided to
go to Canada and began
working in Winnipeg. A
few years later he came to
the United States to work
at the Ford Scientific
Research Foundation where
he worked for five years
developing projects for noise
abatement. One noise
abatement patent he
developed at Ford for
transporting trailers is used
worldwide.
In 1981, Rivin joined the
staff at Wayne State
University as a professor of
mechanical engineering. He
taught many classes
including advanced
mechanical design. When
he noticed that only a few
students signed up for his
class, he decided to change
the title to the mechanical
design of robots. "I made it
more sexy." It was then
very successful but there
were no materials to teach
the class. Rivin then
studied robots and wrote
the first textbook for the
mechanical designs of robots.
He recently took a
sabbatical to consult for
General Motors and become
a visiting professor at the
University of South
Hampton in England at the
Institute of Sound and
Vibration. He also made
many presentations this
year in Spain, England and
Italy. Rivin is also an
editor involved in
translating Russian
engineering journals to
English.
When he is not busy
developing patents, of
which he has more than 40,
he enjoys his family. "We
are very close."

BLAU BAT MITZVAH

It was easy to spot the
Blau family at Lindsay's
bat mitzvah. They were
all wearing white tuxedo
tails with different
colored cummerbunds.
Proud parents are IRV
and JUDY BLAU,
grandparents are LEE
and HARRY BLAU and
MAX FEINBERG. DON
and DONNA
GOLDSTEIN attended
from Boca Raton, while
JEFF BLAU came from
Denver. It was rumored
that Detroit Piston star
ISIAH THOMAS would
show up. He did via a
life-size poster.
