one Knollwood member. "The
biggest problem facing clubs
as they get older and need ex-
tensive maintenance or new
facilities is how to meet the
challenge of generating in-
come without raising dues or
making assessments!'
Franklin Hills members
were recently assessed to
meet the cost of structural
alterations to the clubhouse.
Fees at all three clubs have
risen in recent years to offset
maintenance costs and rapid-
ly escalating insurance rates.
Overall, however, members
report that the clubs are in a
healthy condition.
Though Knollwood, Tam
and Franklin Hills are
predominantly Jewish, the
clubs have non-Jewish
members, mostly as a result
of inter-marriage.
No one, even unofficially,
wants to speculate on what
will happen if private clubs
are - subjected to anti-
discriminatory legislation but
members seem confident that
the clubs will retain their
Jewish context. With or
without legislation, they ex-
pect the clubs to adapt to
gradual social change. They
anticipate that more women
will apply for individual or
primary membership but the
essential character of the
clubs will remain unchanged.
The phrase "extension of
the living room," one member
points out, is not an empty
definition. To most of its
members, he asserts, a coun-
try club is not a status sym-
bol or a door to business op-
portunity, but a "home away
from home."
As long as this is so, he
adds, and as long as the
"Jewish" clubs continue to of-
fer the Jewish community a
place for friendly relaxation
in privacy and social ease,
then whatever the competi-
tion, they will remain healthy
