"There was this juxtaposition
of the incredible lux-
uriousness (of their life) and
yet also of Fannie remember-
ing her poverty," says
Lindinauer.
Even to this day Fannie is
proud of her abilities with
needle and thread. "I never
bought a ready-made dress,"
Fannie explains. The Habers
were very social people. Their
house, which sits deep within
the woods overlooking the
Huron River and which Fan-
nie helped design, was the
scene of many gatherings
over the years. "They had a
salon of sorts," says Lin-
dinauer. But they also were
very private individuals.
Few people, even close
friends, know, for example,
that Fannie and Bill — who
were born within two weeks
of each other — both grew up
in fatherless households. "My
father, who I never knew
because he died when I was
one year old, was a
blacksmith (in Russia)," says
Fannie. "I was the last of
seven children."
Many Ann Arborites,
especially those associated
with U-M, think of the
Habers as locals. "They've
been here since they opened
the place," says G-omberg jok-
ingly. But, as Fannie ex-
plains, she and Bill were both
raised in Milwaukee and both
taught at the University of
Wisconsin, where she receiv-
ed her degree in economics
shortly after World War I.
"I've had a variety of jobs
that gave me a variety of ex-
periences and advantages,"
says Fannie. "I don't have to
be modest," she says directly.
"I wasn't a dumbell. I was
pretty bright."
Others recognized Fannie's
particular and unique
abilities long ago but there's
no doubt that Fannie shined
most in her special relation-
ship to her husband.
Everyone who knows the
Habers refer to them as a cou-
ple, bound together. "Fannie
practiced traditional
wifeliness and raised it to the
state of the art," says Lin-
dinauer. They balanced one
another beautifully.
And the love Fannie feels
for Bill, whom she first know
when she was 2 or 13, hasn't
diminished one iota. "He was
and is a very bright man,
says Fannie. Though time's
passage and illness have
slowed Fannie and Bill these
last few years, their uni-
queness remains. Fanie says
that she has a happy outlook
on things.
"Whatever we were involv-
ed in we always had a feeling
we were doing great things."
Others would agree.
