heard stories so terribly poig-
nant that it made a mark on
my memory forever."
Handleman's documentary
focuses throughout on the in-
terviews, augmented occa-
sionally by still photos, which
help the viewer to better
"see" the experiences related
by the survivor. No part of the
documentary is narrated.
"I believe you're pursuing
film in its purest form when
you make a program without
narration," explained
Handleman. "In this case, the
interviews, augmented as
they are by the visual (stills),
do a more than adequate job."
The program, which took
about eight months to com-
plete, was produced in-
dependently by Handleman,
and had no pre-production
market.
"I just plunged ahead. It's
what I usually do," said
Handleman, who counts
among his most successful
ventures the highly-
acclaimed American Play-
house drama, "The Medal of
Honor Rag," shown on cable
TV arts channel, BRAVO, in
1983. "Afterwards, I try to
find a market.
"People often ask me how I
decide what subjects I'm go-
ing to focus on in a film," said
Handleman, whose interests
have led him to produce other
documentaries on subjects as
varied as music, aviation,
Soviet dissidents, and
American MIAs who fought
in Vietnam. "I have a very
simple answer: whatever
touches my heart. You have to
believe in something very
strongly, I think, and I sup-
pose the financial side of it is
an additional form of proof of
your belief. If you didn't
believe in what you were do-
ing, you wouldn't be investing
— on top of everything else —
all that's financially
necessary."
Handleman, in filmmaking
for about 10 years, has no for-
mal training as a filmmaker.
Previously, he worked as an
assistant to U.S. Rep. Sander
Levin, and studied political
science at Washington
University in St. Louis. He
got into filmmaking, he said,
because he saw it as "a way
of saying things that I think
are important, and a way of
saying things that I think
other filmmakers are not say-
ing."
His decision to make
"Remembering the Holo-
caust" came about, he added,
because he could think of no
more effective way of relating
the story of an attempted ex-
termination of a people than
by having some of those who
survived tell the story.
