The Prime Minister's Mis-
sion, for $100,000 con-
tributors and their adult
children, has recruited six
Detroit families to go to
Poland and Israel. Dates are
Aug. 14-19.
Reservations are stil being
accepted for the Jubilee mis-
sion, for $10,000 contributors,
led nationally by David B.
Hermelin, Oct. 13-19. Pre-
missions will take par-
ticipants to the Soviet Union,
Oct. 5-12, or Morocco, Oct.
9-12. More than 35 Detroit
area couples have already
signed up to join more than
1,000 American Jews in
Israel.
Jane Sherman and Paul
Borman, Campaign chairmen
for 1989, will lead Detroiters
through briefings by top
government leaders, Shabbat
dinner with recent Soviet im-
migrants, and visits to in-
dustrial sites and a Joint
Distribution Committee
(JDC) facility.
The Jubilee mission
celebrates the 50th anniver-
sary of the founding of the
UJA.

Some 150 Detroiters are ex-
pected to participate in
Jewish Welfare Federation-
sponsored trips to Israel this
summer and fall.
Four Detroit area families
have just returned from a
family mission, led by Nor-
man and Susan Pappas. Sun-
day, three more Detroit
families will leave for Israel
led by Dennis and Linda
Kayes.
Participants will take part
in a group bar/bat mitzvah,
tour the Galilee, visit ar-
cheological digs and celebrate
Shabbat at the Western Wall.
Plenty of time is also alloted
for shopping and leisure.

Perlman is national chair-
man of the UJA National
Singles "Hatikvah" (The
Hope) Mission o Israel, July
31-Aug. 10. Susan Alterman
and David Victor will lead
more than 20 Detroiters.
Previous mission participants
will also have the opportuni-
ty to visit Poland before the
main mission.

Prof. Stephen Berk, chair-
man of the department of
history at Union College in
Schenectady, N.Y., will be the
guest speaker at the State of
Israel Bond tribute dinner
sponsored by the Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah,
it was announced by Leah
Snider, dinner chairman.
The event, scheduled for 6
p.m. July 19 at Knollwood
Country CLub, will honor
Albert Newman of Birm-
ingham, a Hadassah
Associate and recipient-elect
of Israel's Ben-Gurion Award.
An historian who has
published studies on East
European Jewry and on
Israel, Prof. Berk is director
of the program of comparative
Communist studies and coor-
dinator of the Union College
Program in Israel. His latest
work is "Year of Crisis, Year
of Hope: Russian Jewry and
the Pogroms of 1881-1882."
Berk earned his doctorate
at Columbia University and
is a graduate of its Russian
Institute. He is a frequent

visitor to Israel and has
published a study called
"Israel and the American Na-
tional Interests."
He serves as an adjunct pro-
fessor at the State Universi-
ty of New York in Albany.
