FRIDAY, JULY 8, 1988

allie Selinger does not
like war. But when her
newspaper asked her to
cover the Lebanon invasion in
1982, she jumped at the
chance.
"We are the women who
send our children and hus-
bands to war, we have a right
to write about what is going
on out there and inject our
perspectives in our stories,"
she says. "I don't love the
army, I don't enjoy this. But
I want to be involved in an
issue that is central to life
here."
At 26, Selinger was impa-
tient to be reporting on the
important issues of the day,
and at that time no issue was
more central or more divisive
than the Lebanon War, then
in its sixth month.
Selinger has come a long
way from the woman's pages
she once edited. rIbday, she is
the defense correspondent of
the leading Hebrew-language
daily, Davar, the only Israeli
defense correspondent to
view the country's military
affairs through the eyes of a
woman.
In some ways, Selinger — a
member of the left-wing Peace
Now and Citizens Rights
Movement — is following a
family tradition. Her father,
Azarya Rappaport, was the
military correspondent for
the Hebrew-language daily,
Ha'aretz, during Israel's 1948
War of Independence, and.

later served as press attache
in New York. Her husband,
who works in Israel's defense
industries, is at times con-
cerned about her safety and
her 24-hour-a-day attachment
to a beeper, but he accepts the
risks she must take as a jour-
nalist covering a hot subject
in a hot region.
During her own military
service, at age 18, Selinger
worked in a sensitive securi-
ty position, and appreciates
the need for military cen-
sorship.
"It's true that the censor
doesn't always ban material
on strictly security grounds,
but I'm very happy there is a
censor. I wouldn't want the
responsibility of deciding on
my own what to print," she
says. "Instinctively I know
there are stories that cannot
be written."
In many ways, Selinger rep-
resents a new generation of
Israeli: she is openly critical
of Israel's occupation of the
West Bank and Gaza Strip
and of nationalistic fervor in
general. At the same time,
though, she recognizes the
need for security.
Her remarkable success as
a military correspondent
stems from her excellent con-
tacts at all levels of the Israeli
military. During our con-
versation at the lel Aviv
Journalists Club, we are fre-
quently interrupted by Israeli
colonels who drop in from the
nearby military headquarters
for a cold drink.
They are on a first-name
basis with Selinger and joke
