I TORAH PORTION SIDEWALK SALE! JULY 7th•10th 4 DAYS ONLY Summer Vacation: Exploring Footnotes RABBI HAROLD S. LOSS Special to The Jewish News T here are moments in an academic environ- ment that we never forget. Whenever I read this week's sidrah, I recall an ex- amination in an introduction to a Bible course. As students, we had been assigned an enormous amount of material. The day of the exam arrived, and a central ques- tion dealt with an analysis of the daughters of Zelophedhad. I had studied the assigned material for weeks, but had missed the footnote that contained the necessary information. Most of my classmates suf- fered the same fate. After the exam we gathered together to Shabbat Pinchas: Numbers 25:10-30:1, Jeremiah 1:1-2:3 read the following footnote: "The question, exemplified in the daughters of one Zelophedhad, is whether daughters may inherit from a father, if there are no sons. The answer is that they may. Then follows a statement on the order of inheritance when there are no children!" The story of the daughters of Zelophedhad from that day has been a pleasant memory. Not simply for the important lesson regarding the role of women as regards in- heritance, but also as a challenge to find other foot- notes in life. For most of us, the summer vacation has begun, and this period includes travel oppor- tunities. Schools are closed and students do not have to look forward to exams. There will be no tests regarding the footnotes in textbooks, but I would like to suggest that we set a summertime goal. Whenever we travel this summer, after we have visited the important tourist attrac- tions, we should leave some time for at least one Jewish footnote. If you are in a historic community, visit an early synagogue. Find a Jewish museum or bookstore in a large city. Call a rabbi or other Jewish professional, and ask if there is something special in the community that Harold Loss is rabbi at Temple Israel. JACKETS-COATS '24" you should visit. Last summer on a visit to the East Coast, my family visited Salem and heard about witchcraft, stood at Plymouth Rock, and toured mansions in Newport. Our trip would have been in- complete, however, without a visit to the beautiful Touro Synagogue. This summer find those wonderful Jewish sights. Perhaps the footnote that you find will leave you and your family with a very special memory. • SUMMER JACKETS • DENIMS $ 19 Longs Jackets • "WET LOOK" RAINWEAR • SWEATER COATS Young Israel Installs Officers ONLY • DESIGNER ZIP-OUT RAINWEAR $ 79 Drizzle, Fog, Hook $ 29- $39 • DOWN FILLED COATS Jackets-Full Length $99 • VERY SPECIAL DESIGNER COATS • ASSORTED WINTER JACKETS Wools-Polyf►lls Now at Bargain Prices Young Israel of Greenfield recently installed its new of- ficers. Kashrut Ruling To Be Appealed Jerusalem (JTA) — The Conservative movement in Israel is planning to appeal to the Supreme Court a decision by the Jerusalem rabbinate not to renew the kashrut cer- tification of the movement's youth hostel on Agron Street here. Rabbi Pesach Schindler, director of the World Center for Conservative Judaism, told the Jerusalem Post last week that the center adheres to the kashrut and Sabbath laws. It has had a kashrut cer- tificate from the local rab- binate for the 14 years since it opened. The sudden with- drawal occurred with no ex- planation. The only reason seems to be that the Orthodox rabbis recently discovered that the hostel was affiliated with Conservative Judaism. 19-'29 $ 29- $ 79 ONLY $49 WINTER BARGAINS SPORTSWEAR DENIM SKIRTS (Famous Maker) $20 SKIRTS - TOPS Junior Sized $5 _SPECIAL GROUP SPRING & SUMMER SPORTSWEAR $ 1 0-$ 40 COATS UNLIMITED WEST BLOOMFIELD - ORCHARD MALL ORCHARD LAKE ROAD AT MAPLE (15 MILE) 855-9955 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 31
