Demjanjuk
Appeals

Jerusalem (JTA) — John
Demjanjuk appealed to the
Supreme Court last week
against his war crimes convic-
tion and death sentence by a
Jerusalem district court in
April. His appeal was based
on the same defense argu-
ment of being a victim of
mistaken identity that was
used during his year-long
trial.
The
Ukrainian-born,
former naturalized American
was found guilty of crimes
against the Jewish people,
war crimes, crimes against
humanity and crimes against
a persecuted people.
He was found by the three-
judge panel, on the basis of
evidence and identification by
Holocaust survivors, to have
been the Treblinka death
camp guard known as "Ivan
the Terrible," who helped
operate the gas chambers
where nearly a million Jews
perished during World War II.
A five justice panel will hear
the appeal next December.

IDF Captures
4 Terrorists

Aviv (JTA) — An Israel
Defense Force patrol captured
four terrorists who were
about to infiltrate into Israel.
They were captured just in-
side the Lebanese border
after a skirmish that left
three of the terorrists slight-
ly wounded.
The incident occurred just
across the border from Kfar
Yuval in Upper Galilee. The
IDF soldiers were on a rou-
tine patrol when they encoun-
tered the gang about to infil-
trate into Israel. They gave
chase which lasted about a
half-hour.
The terrorists were iden-
tified as members of George
Habash's Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine.

Did Red Cross
Aid The Jews?

Geneva (JTA) — A West
German television journalist
has accused the International
Red Cross of doing little dur-
ing World War II to help Jews
in concentration camps and of
facilitating the escape of Nazi
war criminals after World
War II.
The charges were leveled by
Heiner Lichtenstein, cor-
respondent for a West Ger-
man television network who
is also author of a book at-
tacking the Red Cross. His
allegations were published
Monday in La Suisse and La
Tribune De Geneve.
