Architect King Created Wallenberg Lectures Nationally known architect Sol King, who died July 3 at age 78, leaves a record as the designer of scores of impor- tant structures in Michigan, Washington, Florida and other areas. His fame is in numerous other areas. He had impor- tant roles congregationally and he gained a major achievement when he in- stituted the University of Michigan annual lecture tributes in honor of the Swedish rescuer of 100,000 Jews who were endangered in the Nazi roundup of Hungarian Jews intended for the death chambers. Fifteen years ago, Mr. King proposed the idea of the tributes to his alma mater, the University of Michigan College of Architecture. He had the support of Economics Dean William Haber and Detroit associates and the College of Architecture facul- ty unanimously included the idea in its annual programming. Mr. King won the interest of Albert Kahn who employed King in his world-renowned architectural firm. Mr. King became the firm's chairman of the board 25 years ago. He designed the Washington Post building in Washington, the Eastern Airline building in Florida and numerous University of Michigan struc- tures, including the Burton Tower, the Modern Language Building, the Physics and Astronomy Building and the addition to the Graduate Library. He was a past president of the Engineering Society of Detroit and a former board member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. He also was a former trustee of Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Born in Poland, Mr. King lived 63 years in Detroit. He and his wife moved to Palm Beach, Fla., following his retirement. Mr. King leaves his wife, Jennie; a daughter, Susan Ryback of Potomac, Md.; a brother, Harry of California; three sisters, Sadelle Saltsman of West Bloomfield, Gerry Rochkind of Southfield and Charlotte Craig of Livonia; and five grand- children. Gruskin, former vice president of Cunn- ingham Drug Stores, died June 30 at age 78. Born in Detroit, Mr. Gruskin was head of the li- quor department for Cunn- ingham's for more than 50 years. At the time of his death he was a consultant for Arbor, Perry and Apex Drugs. He was a member of Perfection Lodge of the Masons, Cres- cent Shrine club, Scottish Rite and Temple Israel. He leaves his wife, Madelyn; a son, Ronald of Grand Rapids; a daughter, Debra Gluck; and two grandchildren.
