Japanese Envoy Meets Israelis Jerusalem (JTA) — Japan's foreign minister Sosuke Uno, on a one-day visit to Israel, told Israeli leaders that Japan plans to take a more active role to help resolve the Middle East conflict. He re- portedly told Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir that Japan recognizes the Palestinians' right to self-determination, as well as the right of all states in the region to peace and security. Uno's stopover in Israel last week was the first by a Japanese Cabinet minister. It was in reciprocation for the of- ficial visit Shamir made to Japan more than two years ago, when he was foreign minister. It is part of a regional tour that includes Syria, Egypt and _Jordan. The Japanese diplomat met separately with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. He also met with six Palestinian leaders, including a business- man from Nablus and politi- cal activist Feisal Husseini of Jerusalem. Rabbis Approve Candidate Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Chief Rabbinate has given Rabbi Yisrael Lau permission to stand for election as Ashkehazic chief rabbi of Tel Aviv, where the electoral body now includes a woman. Lau, who is chief rabbi of Netanya, is considered the leading candidate for the prestigious post. But although a liberal within the context of Orthodox Judaism, he was reluctant to enter his name, because of the possibili- ty the Chief Rabbinate would raise objections to a woman elector. The masks would protect civilians until the standard masks, kept in emergency storerooms all over the coun- try, could be distributed. The mask, which would cost about $5, would go on sale at retail establishments.
