Bar-Ilan, Young Israel
Join To Host Scholar

Prof. Daniel Sperber, dean
of Bar-Ilan University's facul-
ty of Jewish studies, will be
Detroit's first Bar-Ilan
University — Young Israel of
Southfield Scholar-in-
Residence announced Rabbi
Elimelech Goldberg of Young
Israel of Southfield and
Sharon Hart and Lawrence
Jackier, chairmen of the
Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan
University.
The July 9 program will
represent the first formal
academic collaboration bet-
ween the synagogue and its
Israeli counterpart. On Shab-
bat morning, Prof. Sperber
will speak on "Pinhas — A
Justification for Violence and
Extremism?!" and will
discuss "The Return of Ter-
ritories — Halachic Con-
siderations" that Shabbat
afternoon.
Prof. Sperber was born in
Wales in 1940 at a time when
his parents were ogranizing a
training center for German
refugees. He holds a B.A.
degree in art history from
Courtauld Institute of Art,

and his Ph.D. degree from the
London University College in
Ancient History and Hebrew
Studies. In 1968 he joined the
faculty of Jewish studies at
Bar-Ilan. In addition, he
established a congregation in
Rehavia, Jerusalem, and
served as its rabbi.

He is past chairman of the
Talmud department of Bar-
Ilan, is a full professor and a
member of Israel's Higher
Education Council Planning
and Grants Committee. He is
an incumbent of the Milon
Roven Chair in Talmud at
Bar-Ilan.
Prof. Sperber is the author
of eight books in Jewish
history during the Roman
times.

In addition to the
synagogue, the program is
sponsored by Dr. and Mrs.
Eric Peterson and Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Zwas.
