FRIDAY, JULY 1, 1988

t was such a well-kept
surprise that Mona
Rappaport had already
made reservations for dinner
at another restaurant.
Daughter Linda Solomon,
who was to join her with hub-
by Barry and Mona's man,
Dan Rappaport, said she had
to go to the not-opened-yet
Rattlesnake Club "to meet
the camera crew for her
Channel 2 coverage of the
Grand Prix."
What turned out was a sur-
prise birthday party (Con-
grats, Mona!) at The Rat-
tlesnake Club . . . before it
had opened.
About 30 family membes
attended for a wonderful
evening . . . with yet another
surprise in store for Mona .. .
After the dinner of salmon or
chicken (Barry is a meat lover
and had lamb chops. No sit-
ting on hidden slider ham-
burgers in his pocket) . . . In
came other daughter Jill, an
ace reporter 5 to 6 p.m. on
WCBS-TV in New York, with
a video tape of 30 major
celebrities giving their "Hap-
py birthday" greetings to
Mona . . . Barbara Walters,
Jerry Lewis, Jackie Mason,
Douglas Fairbanks Jr.,
Michael Douglas, etc.
Initial invitation said, "For
Your Eyes Only. Surprise par-
ty details to follow laer" .. .
Most of the invitees thought
they would get their secret
clues from Linda during her
Channel 2 TV appearances,
but they very cleverly came
by mail- . . . in a recorded
message.
The birthday bash for Mona
was given by Dan, Linda and
Jill . . . and even though the
doors were still locked tight,
Linda's good friend, chef/co-
owner Jimmy Schmidt, could
not have asked for a better
opening.
Who says Linda . . . of the
long hair, pretty smile,
gracious ways, and much
talent, can't be in two places
at the same time? . . . Hubby
Barry maintains that she can
do anything, and he's pro-
bably right . . . Her
photographic work is a part of
Linda Solomon . . . so it's
possible this time . . . She'll
have a display of celebrity
shots and other clicker
wonders today through July
15 at both Birmingham and
Rochester locations of Birm-
ingham Camera . . . Linda
will be at the Birmingham
locale tomorrow, 10:30 a.m. to
12 noon.
PRESTIGIOUS CLIO
awards, recently held at the
Marriot-Marquis Hotel in
New York, honoring
worldwide advertising ex-
cellence, was a big night for
Gail Offen-Samuels, creative
group supervisor for
W.B.Doner in Southfield .. .
She won a CLio statuette for
her creation of the Chiquita
fruit radio commercial .. .
Gail is Randy Samuel's part-
ner in life . . . and daughter of
Hyla and Sam Offen.
AS PRESIDENT of the
Michigan Club in Delray
Beach, Fla., Faye B. Weiner
was asked in a newspaper in-
terview what she could not
part with when leaving
Michigan to reside in Florida
Mona's bash was a
preview of the
newest "in" place
in Detroit.
. . . After much thought,
writes Faye, other than her
family and the local bakery
on Nine Mile Rd., her
mother's cast iron skillet for
making blintzes took top
priority.
AMAZING . . . On my desk
is a yellow daffodil plant that
people come in and attempt to
smell . . . I tell all that the
petals are silk, but after feel-
ing them it's as if I told them
a fib . . . That's how real the
daffodil plant seems to be .. .
Arlyne Cherrin's Silk Forest
on Northwestern Hwy. has
this and other dandies . . . In
fact, someone I know bought
a dozen roses in a box all tied
up pretty . . . gave them to his
wife . . . and she was stunned
to discover they were silk .. .
pleasantly, I might add .. .
Arlyne even sprays her
flowers the aroma of real ones
. . . Best fact is that the
silkies never let wonderful
memories die.
