Personal/FamilyProblems?

Let's talk
about it.

DR. RON RICE

PSYCHOLOGIST—

COPING AS A SINGLE PARENT

With divorce rates approaching
50 percent, the numbers of single
parents are quite significant. Many
of them feel insecure and worry
about their chances of meeting so-
meone they will like who will res-
pond to them and accept their
children.
One of the best ways of meeting
new people who will have a
special understanding of the situa-
tion is to join a single-parents'
organization. Many Y's, child
guidance centers, and synagogues/
temples have groups that focus on
themes of particular interest to
single parents. Very often these
groups provide free child care at
their activities. "Parents Without
Partners" is another well-known
organization which has chapters
throughout the United States.

There are also a number of new
magazines directed specifically
toward the interests and needs of
single parents.
The important thing is to stay in-
volved and not become isolated.
Remember that any new step feels
awkward and uncomfortable at
first. However, you'll soon meet
new people, and that is the point
of it all.
