You have to become mentally, physical- ly ready and you can't let your concentration go. You've got to be 100 percent into the game. Because one mistake and that's it." If a relief pitcher is having trouble with the mental part of the game, it can affect his physical performance. "At times," recalls Dorf- man, "I think I pushed too hard. Because there were times when I was so tense and I couldn't relax. I pushed too hard. I didn't let things take their course. I put too much pressure on myself. Instead of pitching with my mind, all I was thinking about was, `What if this happens, what if that happens?' Which forced me to throw balls and have a rough time. ."At times, at Oakland, I was successful. But there were quite a number of times things didn't go my way. I really wasn't used to it." Dorfman's success on a given day also depends on whether he has a strong fastball. "Some days I feel like I can just blow everyone away. Then some days I don't think I'd be able to break a pane of glass." At times, Dorfman prefers throwing his hard breaking ball because "anybody can hit a fastball." But there is also pride involved for a power pit- cher. "When you're on the mound you like to feel power- ful, you like to think, 'Well, hey, I've got this guy's number.' But it all comes down to thinking and out- smarting the batter . . . I think I've changed a lot, go- ing from fastballs to a lot more breaking balls." Dorfman says he is also working on a split-finger fastball, which sinks sharply at the plate. "It's not perfected," he admits, "or else I'd be in the majors . . . hopefully by fall it'll be right in there." Whether or not he ever perfects the split-finger pitch, professional baseball is something Dorfman thinks about. "It's always some kid's dream to be a ballplayer, whether it be the minors or the pros, and I've always had that dream as well. I'm trying to deal realistically, but if I could have one thing, other than to have me prosper at Oakland, it would be to be a pro ballplayer and get drafted. Getting drafted has been the one thing I've thought about .. . "Once I get my shot, I'll be They might guess the size. They'll never guess the price.
