site of the infamous Mau-
thausen concentration camp
is a matter of deep shock to
the Jewish community.
Seymour Reich, interna-
tional president of B'nai
B'rith, said "This kind of in-
sensitivity is especially pain-
ful coming from a religious
leader who revises history by
terming the Austrian people
`victims' of Nazi aggression,
rather than collaborators, and
who has twice chosen to meet
with Kurt Waldheim, an un-
repentant liar with a Nazi
past."
Chief Rabbi Eisenberg and
Paul Grosz, president of the
Federal Association of Jewish
Communities, were among
the Jewish community
leaders who met the pope
before his visit to Mau-
thausen. They described the
encounter as "disappointing"
The meeting took place at
the archbishop's residence in
Vienna. Grosz, who reported-
ly softened his originally
planned remarks, at the re-
quest of other Jewish leaders,
told the pope that "many
Austrians have still not come
to terms with their pasty'
He was referring to the elec-
tion of Waldheim in 1986
after massive evidence was
made public of his complicity
in Nazi atrocities as a Ger-
man army intelligence officer
in the Balkans during the
World War II.
The pope held the first of
his scheduled meetings with
Waldheim on the day he
arrived in Austria. They are
scheduled to meet a second
time at the end of the papal
visit.
Their first meeting was
followed by a reception for the
foreign diplomatic corps,
hosted by Waldheim in honor
of the pope. The Israeli charge
d'affaires in Vienna, Israel's
ranking diplomat here, was
not scheduled to attend the
reception. Israel has not had
an ambassador in Austria
since Waldheim's election in
the summer of 1986.

Mixed News On
Diplomatic Front

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
received both bad news and
good news Tuesday about its
relations with Eastern Euro-
pean countries.
In Yugoslavia, the Parlia-
ment decided not to resume
diplomatic ties with Israel at
this time. In Warsaw, Yossi
Beilin, political director
general of Israel's Foreign
Ministry. scored something of
a diplomatic coup by becom-
ing the first foreign visitor to
meet with Poland's new
foreign minister, Tadeusz
Olechowski.

Herman Frankel Organization Residen-
tial Community.
There is complete separation between
the Full Service Convalescent Home on
the upper floor and the Supportive
Care Manor on the lower floor. The
building is on a hillside and both levels
have direct access to the extensively
landscaped grounds.

Rex Lanyi and Herman Frankel, the
developers, are particularly proud that
Windemere both functionally and
aesthetically provides a residential
environment that preserves dignity,
beauty, and maximum independence at
a time in life that its residents require
some medical and social support.
