Mark Varvak, a scientist in applied mechanics, his wife, Nelly and their son Alex- ander were denied permission to emigrate to Israel in 1979. Their situation as refuseniks quickly deteriorated and after a few years, they divorced and Varvak moved in with his mother, but continued to see his son regularly. He became involved in the refusenik community in Kiev and in April 1980 he signed a joint letter of appeal to the Jewish people in Israel and the Diaspora, describing the deteriorating situation in Kiev where the KGB increas- ed its interrogations of Jews in Keiv and made threats and arrests. Stewart and his family recently visited the Soviet Union and spent some time with the Varvaks. They were advised that Varvak emigrated and is living in Brooklyn, N.Y. Nelly and Alexander live with Nelly's mother and would emigrate if her mother would also leave. Nelly is an electrical engineer and her mother returned to school to become a pediatrician. David and Steward have written to Alexander and they will attempt to reach the family by phone. B'not Mitzvah Are Celebrated HOT SPRINGS SPAS are engineered for the reality of daily use. Emily Beth Grey, daughter of Ruth and James Grey, and Lindsay Rose Blau, daughter of Judith and Irving Blau, will twin the observance of their b'not mitzvah at Temple Israel at 10:30 a.m. on Satur- day with Sofya Gorokhov, daughter of Asya and David Gorokhov of Moscow. EMily will celebrate her bat mitzvah with her sister Rachel, brother Jeffrey and grandparents Lydia and Ar- chie Grey and Sarah and John Nemon and great- grandmother, Frieda Nemon. Sharing in Lindsay's bat mitzvah will be her sisters Ali and Lainie and grandparents Lee and Harry Blau and Max Feinberg. Mr. Gorokhov is a physicist and a mathematician, but since applying for an exit visa in 1981, he is unable to find work in his field. The reason for refusal is "secrecy." An engineer, Mrs. Gorokhov is also unable to find profes- sional employment. The Gorokhovs are religious Jews and speak English and Hebrew. Emily and Lindsay have written letters to Sofya but have received no response. Sarah Walker Shares Rite Sarah Walker, daughter of Robert and Sandra Walker of Troy, will twin her bat mitz- vah 10 a.m. Saturday with Eugena Galperina of Moscow, USSR. The bat mitzvah will takeplace at Troy Jewish Con- gregation. Rabbi Ernst Con- rad will officiate. Eugena's father, Lev, is an engineer, but since applying for a visa in 1983 he has been unemployed. Eugena also lives with her mother, Sonia, an economist and a brother, Yakov. The family had repeatedly been denied exit visas because there was "no reason to leave the USSR." The Galperins have recently been given permission to leave the USSR.
