warmth of its people. "I think
what I like most about it is
people here have what I con-
sider to be their priorities in
order. They're polite, they
seem concerned about their
families, they're concerned
about their friends. They
have a sense of belonging
here.
`.`To me, your home should
be with people whom you live
amongst and I'm happy to
live amongst these people and
• hat's what I like most about
it. The rest of the things that
it has to offer, restaurants,
music . . . I like the fact that
it's a musical town, obvious-
ly, with my background. I like
living in a well-kept secret.
I'm really happy here."
The never-married Albom
said he has a nice social life
in Detroit, but regrets having
the time to date. He said he
does hope to marry some day.
Albom said he's happy with
his job at the Free Press, and
said he hopes he can stay
there a long time. "I have
such good feelings about the
place and such good feelings
about the people that I work
for that I try harder to do a
good job." And what are the
consequences for him if the
Joint Operating Agreement
with Detroit News becomes a
fait accompli or fails? If it
fails, he's out of a job. But, he's
hopeful that it will be approv-
ed. In fact, the JOA may even
help the Free Press. "People
don't realize that if this JOA
goes through the Free Press
will be the dominant paper in
this market. We'll be the mor-
ning paper. And all the
demographics show that mor-
ning papers are the wave of
the present and the future."
And what if by some quirk
of fate he couldn't be a sport-
swriter anymore? "I've
thought about that. In my
heart of hearts I'd probably
still love music more than
anything. But, I think I
learned that it's not always
the best move to make the ob-
ject of your heart the object of
your profession.
"If I couldn't write at all,
God. I'd probably wind up as
some lounge player in some
little jazz cafe in Tahiti or
someplace. At least I could
live in a nice place. I actually
saw one on Maui, a little jazz
club. It was a but really. It
was big hut. It was up on
stilts, had a thatched roof.
They had a little jazz combo
there playing, way in the cor-
ner of Maui. I said, 'You know,
I could be happy here. Maybe
if they have an opening, if
they (Detroit) don't have a
JOA' . . . " CI
