rehabilitaion. The interview
followed, and Albom at-
tributes its success to the fact
that Parrish "trusted me
more" because they were on
the same level — not in an
adversarial position.
Albom said he has a pretty
good rapport with most of the
players and makes a con-
certed effort to do so. And
what about the incident last
March when Detroit Tiger
pitcher Guillermo Hernandez
dumped ice water on the col-
umnist? "I can't think of any
other athlete that I have a
negative rapport with and the
one that I do has to became
an incident, has to get out in
the news. That's a shame."
Hernandez doused the Free
Press writer in anger over a
column which appeared in
1987 in which Albom quoted
the pitcher, after alerting him
that he was using the quote,
about his disregard for the
fans. Meanwhile, throughout
the rest of the season, Her-
nandez was not proving to be
much of a help to his team
and the fans responded in
kind. He blamed his poor pit-
ching and fan jeering on
Albom.
Albom responded in his
March 3 column: "I still can't
believe one column 11
months ago, for which he has
only himself to blame — after
all, those were his words, not
mine — can still upset him."
After it happened, Albom
found himself the focus of the
story and he was getting calls
for interviews from broadcast
and print media from
throughout the country.
But, he admitted he learn-
ed from the experience. "In a
weird way it taught me just
how powerful the media is in
this country and it was in-
teresting to be part of a story
instead of writing one. I have
new respect for the athletes
for how they tolerate such
widespread exposure. It real-
ly is enormous.
"And then a lot of people
got the story wrong. And I
could see that too. It made me
vow to myself even more than
I have . . . to make sure I'm
accurate and to make sure I
don't take anything for
granted because I know how
that feels to even read one
story that got it wrong. It
hurts."
Nevertheless, Albom, who
is heard 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.
Monday through Friday on
WLLZ-FM, is having a love
affair with Detroit. He could
have stayed in New York with
the trendy night clubs,
nationally-acclaimed theater,
music and arts centers. In-
stead, Albom prefers living in
Detroit because of the
