respect my work, which is
separate from our personal
relationship," Ruth said. "I
took everything he said too
personally. It took me some
time to realize I was getting
the same treatment as
everyone else."
Rob Nusbaum never intend-
ed to work anywhere but his
father's company, New York
Carpet World. He has never
worked for anyone else, and
always had one goal in mind.
"I'm learning from the tren-
ches up. I have a lot of
pressure from my father (Irv-
ing), and his partner (Marvin
Berlin) to learn quickly. My
goal is to run this company,
be on the top level," Nusbaum
said.
Today, he is the district
supervisor for six stores in the
Detroit area. New York

who had misconceptions
about working with the boss'
son.
"When you have the same
name as the boss, people do
react. You just can't abuse it,"
Nusbaum said.
"Going into a family
business, there's definitely a
credibiblity issue with other
people involved in the
business," Potiker added.
"Let's face it, there's going to
be some hostility there, but
it's a subtle type of thing. I've
never encountered any pro-
blems."
It wasn't easy for Potiker to
join the company after he
finished law school. At first,
it was hard for him to judge
his performance at work
because he was uneasy about
being the president's son.
"I knew I was doing well
when I realized corporate
leaders were coming to me to
help them make decisions,"
Potiker said. "I started
evaluating myself on my own
performance, not comparing
myself to other people."
Tom Rosin is vice president
of the Rosin Company, a real
estate and development firm
based in Southfield. He
oversees general operations
for his father, Robert, who
started the company in 1965
with his brother, the late
Richard Rosin.
Tom Rosin and Ruth Stone
share the same philosophy on
parent/child professional
relationships.
"Who is going to care about
the business more than a son
or daughter? But it's not easy
all the time. Like any other
relationship, you have to try
and make it work," Rosin
said.
"Stone and Simon did well
before I got there," explained
Stone. "They'd do well if I
weren't there. But my com-
mitment makes me a
valuable employee. I want
things to be good."

Rob Nusbaum

Carpet World operates 100
stores in eight states.
As an heir to largest
specialty carpet store in the
country, Nusbaum said he
has much to learn about the
business.
"The sky's the limit. Who
knows, we could have 1,000
stores in 10 years. You have to
constantly look for new
things and keep expanding,"
he said.
As did Potiker, Nusbaum
knew he had to be diplomatic
